Former forum member Resmoroh passes away.

Perhaps some long standing members on here will remember Peter Davies ?

Resmoroh – Peter Davies

6 September 2024, 22:14

I very much regret to tell you Peter, my good friend, passed away on 11 August after a long illness; he was in his 89th year. I had known him since the mid-1980s so we went back a long way. Although a civilian for most of his Met Office career, he was also an officer in the RAF Reserve and spent much of 1982-85 with the Mobile Met Unit on Ascension Island or the Falklands. He eventually became its Second in Command on promotion to Sqn Leader in 1990 – and was even mobilised for the Balkans crisis after retiring in 1996.

Peter’s great interest in all things historical is reflected by his user name Resmoroh – Researching the Met Office Roll of Honour – a project we spent some eight years on. It involved putting together biographies of the 74 names on the Met Office Roll of Honour for WW1 and WW2, after we learnt the organisation had no knowledge about them. His skill in tracing the families and descendants was remarkable.

I miss him greatly.

Brian

I wonder whether Peter was the reason I joined the Flypast forum back in the last century, as I found a met man in Newfoundland in my family, and *someone* put me onto a historian who helped me try to track him down (he eventually turned up in Arizona, hard to get further away from Newcoundland!).

Whatever the reason, I’m sorry to hear of his death. Somehow “Blue skies” doesn’t seem a fitting valediction for a met man.

Unfortunately, Peter was before my time on this Forum. However, I think the Met service are the un-sung hero’s of Aviation.

I passed throu’ ASI to / from Mount Pleasant (FI) twice in 1985 in the “delightful” Tristar. I thought ASI Met was provided by the USAF – but I could be wrong!

At Mount Pleasant, you could have 4 different types of weather in the time it took to eat your breakfast. So down there he would certainly have been very busy.

RIP Peter.
