In November 1967 the last US Navy flying boat, a Martin Marlin SP-5B No5533 of VP-40 flew back from the Pacific to the United States and NAS North Field, San Diego, in particular to take part in a final flypast over the base marking the last flight of a Martin flying boat, but also the end of 56 years of continuous US Navy seaplane operations. This particular aircraft was later to become the sole surviving example of its type to be preserved at the Naval Air Museum at NAS Pensacola, Florida.
