Hi Phillip
Mostly correct about the Lewis but annoyingly enough I had a couple of prototype water cooled versions in the armoury in Sydney when I was in the Army and they dated back to trials with a Wapati in the 1920 to improve cooling at high rates of fire when barrels were cooking off. Not a great story however as all the gear required to make it work was counter productive and I believe on occasion the cooling water froze!!!1

just a quick correction, Lewis guns don’t have water jackets……….they are air cooled…easy error to make cus they do look like water jackets.
Also the lewis design was copied in the German Fallschirmjager assault rifle FG-42

Both are actually wooden replicas reputedly made for ‘Biggles’ the film….very very well made though and quite cool….
‘spect ya didnt anticipate a sensible reply didya!

Shame about the rest of the movie… And no, I didn’t expect a sensible reply!
Heyy, I admit my schoolboy error – I’m no expert on these things! I tend to think of Lewis guns as having the water cooloing jacket, so the thought that it might be a Lewis slipped me utterly!

Yep first one a Spandau MG 08/15 as a lightened machine gun based on the 1912 Maxim Heavy Machine Gun, the German Imperial Air Service decided to build a specially modified version for use in aircraft. It was essentially the same as the standard 08/15 with several modifications. LMG = Luft Maschinen Gewehr= Aircraft Machine Gun
This special model was produced exclusively at the Spandau Arsenal beginning late in 1916 with overall production reaching over 23,000 by the end of the war. This version, with stock and trigger was used in by the rear gunner in Halberstadt, Pfalz, Rumpler and Gotha aircraft.
Second one aha! Schoolboy error :diablo: its a Lewis Aerial Gun (SE5 etc) not a Vickers K or VGO (Vickers Gas Operated) look similar but are completely different….note on Lewis full trigger/grip and spade handle, VGO is one piece stock with cutouts….
Interesting fact so advanced was the Lewis design that the mechanism was copied for the MG42 (now MG3 and still in production) and for the American M60…

I thought we were just playing silly b.s here but… What is he doing with what look’s to my untrained eye to be a Vickers “K” machine gun, and is the first one really a Spandau?
OK, let the flame war recommence!
