Forumites at Leg ends, Duxford

To the happiness of some, and to annoy the cr*p out of others, here is another Duxford (and Legends) thread. I am flying over to Stansted on Thursday morning, and wonder about what the intrepid warbird afficionados will do! Will there be any action/and or people around on the Thursday? Or will most arrive on the Friday? If negative I guess I will go down to London on Thursday and come up on the Friday. Will there be a gathering at the Red Lion on Friday, etc?

Last year, they had free busses going from the train station to Duxford every 20 minutes or so. The same back to Cambridge. We got off the train and jumped straight onto the bus.

It now looks as though I’m going straight up to Cambridge on the Thursday afternoon and will stay there until Monday morning. Am I mistaken, or was there some muttering about some kind of bus service towards Dux from Cambridge on the Sat, and Sunday? I will apparently stay not so far from the railway station!

Look forward to see you all there!

I don’t know why it is, but they all go to DX, the OW crowds are fantastic, and that is a very small crowd line, the Mildenhall ones used to be, apart from the brain deads who used to take their dogs, why the USAAF used to allow that is beyond me, dogs and fast jets are a bad combination.

I’m not in a position to make any theories. All Im saying is that when I went last year I had absoluetely no problems. Yes, I heard the guy on the speaker telling people to stop standing in the seating area. Now I wasnt in the seating area but rather somewhere down the road close to a few of those airliners placed there and had no problems with anything.

How people go when they have no interest is beyond me, but I have not experienced so first hand. Guess we’ll see in July.

Now, don’t get me wrong here, I’m not whingeing about Legends or Duxford, I think that the atmosphere at Legends is fantastic, Iv’e been to every one, apart from last year when I was ill, I always meet up with friends and relatives as I will do so this year.
However it’s when the flying starts that gets me. The Tankbank is unquestionably the best place to go, get to the right spot and the grass take offs come right at you as do the flybys from the right and of course you have the a/c taxiying so close to you.
Now I’ve taken my kids and their mates there a few times and they get bored, but I would never allow them to run around in front of photographers, especially people with camcorders, waving inflatable Spitfires in the air and screaming.
Neither would I stand in front of folks trying to take pictures either.
Last Autumn Airshow it was intolerable, I even had a crowd of teenagers in front of me who had no interest in what was happening and just kept shoving each other about and being a pain, and that doesn’t include the ignorant scumbag who kept standing in front of me with his little digi every time I prepared for a shot, who I eventually pushed down the bank and threatened with decapitation, there’s no need for this, the public have become so selfish.
The best Legends I went to was a few years ago when I was ordered to park right up to the fence next to the Tankbank, great, no stepladders in front and I could sit on the car roof and enjoy the show with no interuptions.
What I’ve tended to do at DX is go in on a Saturday, soak up the atmosphere and film what I can, then go back on a Sunday, chuck me bike in the car, park in the village, then cycle around the perimeter taking videos and pictures from various locations.
I agree with the safety aspect, personally I think that the police should shut off the road opposite the airfield to people as well as cars, when the Firefly came down it cleared one bloke by a few feet, mind you he probably made a few quid by selling his frightening video to Sky, how he kept on filming during that awful interlude is beyond me.
But there are places that are safe, it’s just the famillies that go for a picnic in those low overfly zones that get me, they haven’t got a clue what could happen, I remember once, walking along with me bike and one of the Reds came over the field opposite at about 20 ft over a crowd of kids chucking soil at each other, and boy, did they scream, but why did their parents take them there.
Got to inflate the paddling pool now, see you at the Viscount.

I don’t understand the stuff about the crowds and obnoxious people.

I was standing just a bit away from the biggest crowd, had a fantastic view, no stupid people with cameras messing up my view…be happy so many people comes to these shows, without all those people there would be no airshows.

Legends is a special weekend to me. It’s about me mates, it’s about some ghosts, its about some memories, it’s about some very special aircraft supplied by very special people on one weekend for my pleasure (and yours, and yours and yours…) It’s about the Red Lion, it’s about George, It’s about a hundred different things. And this year its about two more personal things. My little girl Eloise, and my old mate Steve.[/QUOTE]

Perfectly put Snapper

If you don’t like it, don’t go!! BUT, don’t whinge about it and don’t freeload by sitting in a field.

I love it, had to miss it last year and don’t plan to again.

Andy, it’s obvious why people go on about how wonderful it is – it IS wonderful. You ahve to remember though, its what is above, what you are looking at, that’s wonderful. Ignore all the crap if you want, but don’t tar the actual view above with the same brush.

Pete
no abuse from me.
Many of your reasons are exactly the ones that have made me give up on Leg-ends.
Why it’s supposed to be a pleasure to be squeezed onto that tank bank (the only place to watch unless one wants to pay again) with the horde is beyond my comprehension.
Why people go on endlessly about how wonderful it is, never ceases to baffle me.
There are other equally good shows around the World–Legends isn’t the only one.
And it’s expensive and It’s only a four hour show too.

Hurl abuse if you want but I’m done with it.

Yes I will be more than happy to put up with the pushing and shoving on the Tankbank to put faces to names in front of the Viscount, however with the usual 1 o’clock start it doesn’t leave much time for introductions.
Incidentally, World Cup Final is 19:00 on Sunday so the Red Lion Is Out, I’m more tempted to go on the sunday as that is the only day when the Lanc appears and lands, which tends to be a twitchy experience at DX.
To be honest, I got so peed off with the manners of people at the Autumn airshow, that I would find it more preferable to be a git and ‘freeloader’ and sit in the field opposite, no whining kids, traffic jams, or scumbags standing in front of you with cameras when you are trying take pictures and it’s obvious to them what you’re trying to do yourself. Coupled with that, the overflying is amazing, probably dangerous, the Firefly crash was not fun though, being one of the first on the scene, so I will see how I feel on the ‘Day of Days’
I await the torrent of abuse.

Stormin’ and me will be there from Friday come and see us on the BBMF trailer

Fluffy do you guys know who will be flying the Spitfire yet. I was hoping to catch up with Bob Judson if he is flying at Legends. Last weekend he popped down from Biggin Hill and did a display in the Heathfield area. Very good it was too, nice to see a display away from an airfield and in amongst the valley and trees.

Unfortunately I’ve got to go Sunday rather than Saturday this year.
I was invited to a birthday bash about 18 months ago – what a totally inconsiderate day to have a birthday. 🙁 Difficult to get out of it with that much advance notice.

If anybody’s still around Sunday, no doubt I’ll have my usual habits, ending in the Lion.

Hopefully we be able to hold the annual Legends Red Lion raffle on the Saturday evening, the majority of the prizes being avaition related books dvd’s etc. Any other items would be welcome and can be past to me on the Saturday evening at the Red Lion.

We are open to other suggestions, however at the moment this years funds will go to help maintain the Grace Spitfire. In the past we have held raffles to support Merlins Over Malta and the Mark Hannah Burns Trust.
