Just as my Flight Attendant Wife says that she likes to see a lot of grey hair (or a lot of no-hair) in the Cockpit: A retired four-striper friend (PA and UA 747’s) states that the only reason God made 747’s with 4 engines was that there was nowhere to put a 5th! 😀
I cannot help looking out of 777, 767 or 757 windows on the way from the West Coast to Hawaii and just wondering how long before a double engine failure, however unlikely, WILL cause a ditching?
ETOPS is now 180 minutes and THAT is a long time on just one donkey, particularly on the SFO – HNL run, the longest no-diversion sector in the world of approx 2,400 SM (2,000 NM).
Any comments from A340/B747 drivers and from ……. the lesser among us!

At last 4 engined aeroplanes have been made to comply with fire protection, etc, but it took the introduction of long haul twins to make that happen.

Well, in a twin engine aircraft…if an engine fails it’s classed as an emergency and it must proceed to the nearest suitable airfield, where as a four engine aircraft does not need to divert. As long as it meets the required fuel, safety and clearance requirements it can proceed to the destination.
In other words, I like 4 engines..oh, and it has 195 mins of fire protection.:D

I realize that reliability factors are incredibly good these days and the volcanic ash injestion by BA over Bali (?) that caused all 4 engines to flame out could not have been avoided by having 6 engines. But the PA that hit a flock of seagulls on departure from LHR a few years ago showed no ill effects until a vibration alert over Iceland. Accordingly #3 was shut down and they elected to continue to BOS. However, sometime later #4 suffered a (contained) blade failure which changed the situation somewhat. The crew elected to restart #3 and divert but could not get it to fire up. The result was an uncomfortable night in hotels in Gander as opposed to a long swim.
As another buddy says who flies B300 King Airs and also an F.E. Cessna Caravan: “Which would he rather be in over the Sierra Nevada Mountains at night in a snow storm when a warning light comes on?”

You must have been drunk when you posted all those outlandish rumors that never came to fruition, as well. Moral of the story: Alcohol consumption by those who cannot control their liquor, is bad.

Yeah but that has nothing to do with the plane. Plus in another thread you said the service on Emirates was great so what are you on about?
By: Airline owner - 27th March 2004 at 20:14
I can sometimes feel worried by the cabin crew The BY 757 services (all of them) were relaxing. i had no reason to feel bad at all . I was expecting a great service from the worlds leading airline but the cabin crew made me feel edgey

Did you feel that the engines were going to fall off in the A330, or something? Is Boeing’s construction more rigid than that of Airbus?

So all the flights on the list, they are the only 2 youve felt safe in? What made you feel not safe in the others?
By: Bmused55 - 27th March 2004 at 20:03
in this day and age, each is just as safe as the other.
I’d feel more safe flying over the pond in a 4 jet though
