Foyle's War

I’ve just finished watching the complete series of Foyle’s War on DVD…though not in the one sitting.

What a stunning program! Beautifully shot, great scripts, excellent cast (especially Honeysuckle Weeks) and totally absorbing.

Thanks heavens for such wonderfully produced programs as Foyle’s War. UK drama at it’s best.

Ah, there you go Moggy….failing to suspend those crtical faculties, eh? Obviously you fail to appreciate that the North and South Downs were very much bigger in 1940!

Well OK, just to bring it back into context….I noticed the use of MH434 during the 1st season on a ‘secret’ airfield testing Chain Home.

Not half as secret as the BoB airfield featured in Dark Blue World which appeared to be in the middle of a mountain range.

… a brilliant example of UK drama that seems completely beyond the abilities of Australian TV producers.

I suggest you try and seek out the Australian made ‘A Thousand Skies’ (The story of Charles Kingsford Smith) and ‘The Great Air Race’. (The 1934 MacRobertson Air Race.) We got the former from out local independent DVD library. I agree I’d generally not bother with current Aussie made TV, but the feature film Kokoda got a reasonable reception.

I seem to remember reading Clive Denny ending up in the series somewhere, but couldn’t pick him…any clues?

Anyway, the Karma Sutra aside, it was an excellent series, and I say again: a brilliant example of UK drama that seems completely beyond the abilities of Australian TV producers.

As Stuart pointed out, I suspect there is rather more than just a tenuous link with historic aviation; the Blitz, Battle of Britain, Foyle’s son a fighter pilot and at least one episode set on an airfield, with Historic Aircraft Collection’s Spitfire Mk V and a crash scene etc etc. But hell…..who cares about any historic aviation content. Aren’t we talking Honeysuckle Weeks here? As for 175 positions….tch….Sam Stewart aint that type of ‘gel, surely not?!

As I recall, one of the main characters was himself an RAF pilot; central to the plot (especially in the early episodes) .

Fair enough, not the strongest of links to ‘Historic Aviation’ but we can let it slip under the fence…but if my earlier post is read correctly it was a dig at Moderator procedure …we in the ‘Mother Country’ need our sense of humour, more that ever nowadays perhaps, but fair play also still counts for something, and rules for one and changing goalposts for another ,is slightly irksome….only slightly… God knows there’s enough to concern us without trivia like this. Mea Culpa… for even bothering to rise to the bait! No hard feelings to all those Oz b******s and ex-pats who used to be my friends!

PS I like Foyle’s War…I like Michael Kitchen..his understated method of acting is excellent…did you see him as Berkeley-Cole in ‘Out of Africa’…and Meryl Streep….now there’s supreme talent!….Better not go there! Mod! MOD!MOD! Where are you? OK I’m going….:p

I can just hear that Rhodean accent now from Sam Stewart…”Oh wizard, I just found this absolutely spiffing book on 175 positions of sexual intercourse! Wouldn’t it be fun to try some tonight after bedtime? We’ll have to be jolly quiet though, if my landlady hears us we’ll both be for the high jump…”
QUOTE]

What has ‘Foyle’s War’ and this to do with Historic Aviation? Thought that a trigger-happy Mod with have moved this elsewhere , before it got going, to a more suitable locale such as ‘General Discussion’, perhaps?

Isn’t this a prime example of Moderators suiting themselves as to thread content ? It wouldn’t be the first time one particular Mod had moved threads at his own , in my view, misguided whim.:dev2:

Well, glad to see the Mother Country inhabitants haven’t lost their sense of humour.

Started watching the show back in 2004. Now I got all of the episodes on DVD. It’s a stunning show. The stories are usually great but it’s the whole atmosphere of a 1940’s England that sucks me in. It’s brilliant.

Yeah, I reckon that’s what really struck me too. The atmosphere was beautifully set. I got the same feeling from the film ‘Jack the Ripper’ with Michael Caine and Lewis Collins.

Kingdom was a bit like that for those of us who live in Norfolk. The main action centred around Swaffham, but it suddenly developed a harbour which is a bit odd bearing in mind how far inland it is.

You just have to suspend those critical faculties or you’ll never enjoy it.

Moggy

Ah….Swaffham Harbour! Is the Fenland Mountain Rescue Team still based there?:D

They are planning a new series (set post-war) entitled ‘Foyle’s Peace’.

According to the Mail on Sunday (who had a short article about it on August 24th) both Michael Kitchen and Honeysuckle Weeks will be reprising their roles.

Worth looking forward to…

Out… Roxeth

Whilst I kind of agree I do have to say that as a nearby resident of Hastings (and having lived in the Old Town there for some time) I am disappointed that so much of the filming was not shot there. As with all locations in the UK, modern development is often a problem….but there are PLENTY of timeless scenes in Hastings and surrounding country. A shame we are treated to country mansions nowhere near here, or “Hastings Dockyards” where warships were repaired. All we have at Hastings is a small harbour arm and a fishing fleet.

Anyway….agreed on Honeysuckle Weeks!

Look out for the “Blackout Times” indicator board sometimes seen on Foyle’s office wall. It is an orginal Hastings war relic from the ARP Control Centre and now on MY office wall. Now…..where’s that Honeysuckle got to with my Cocoa. 😉
