FR.5 WK277 Swift at Newark Air Museum

I had read recently in a aviation magazine that Newark Air Museum ‘s Supermarine Swift WK277 might be moving out of the new hangar since it is a composite airframe. Apparently it has been downgraded from a “Benchmark” airframe to “Significant” airframe by the BAPC.

Has anyone else heard this story? It would seem such a shame for what must be fairly rare airframe..

The reason the Swift ‘may’ have to go back outside is ownership issues in connection with the requirements of the Lottery grant. As far as I am aware the museum have tried hard to resolve these matters.

Its nice to see it indoors, particularly as it’s parked next to the Hunter F1 and I am sure it will remain inside if possible.

The Vulcan remains the property of Stuart Stephenson as it’s not been sold yet, however I understand there are a couple of interested parties.

Its the 22nd anniversary of the delivery of the aircraft, Howard Heeley has written an interesting article about the events surrounding the delivery of the aircraft. Don’t forget this was the only Vulcan delivered to an unlicensed airfield and Winthorpe’s one and only jet landing!

Edited to say F4 beat me to it by three minutes!!

Don’t know if Mr Stephenson is still the owner, but unlikely to have changed hands I suspect.

Perhaps the Swift will/or could be moved out of the new hangar and into one of the other buildings…I think I read that at least one airframe was moving out of the old and into the new building..maybe the SAAB Draken is to be moved..anyone know what airframes are confirmed to being in the new section

Moving the Swift outside would be ridiculous, why not move their Jet Provost outside its not like their ain’t any Jet Provosts inside and theirs loads still flying or taxing.

A photo of the Swift taken on Nov 4th last year. (note the excellent condition would soon be a thing of the past if it goes outside.)

The BAPC downgrading something would mean that they actually did something, which seems unlikely. I will have a chat with the current chairman of BAPC, and see what he says.

I doubt that Hunter undercarriage would fit a Swift – I suspect it really does have Swift undercarriage fitted!

I had heard exactly the same story about the Newark Swift from a friend who recently visited the Museum. I believe the composite aspect is related to the fact that its undercarriage at least is NOT off a Swift (ex Hunter perhaps). If it is moved out it will be a great shame as one of the few other Swifts in the UK continues to suffer the ravages of the weather at Upper Hill and we could do with examples of the type being less in jeopardy.

Hi

There’s about 12 of them buried at Maralinga – extreamly well documented – only trouble is they are self illuminating and will be for a few million years.

As far as I’m aware she’s not a composite airframe and I’d be surprised if she’s been downgraded in BAPC’s listings-‘277 is one of only 4 Swifts in existance. The airframe is owned by a private individual rather than the museum,so perhaps there is some sort of ownership issue,it’s the only reason I can think of.
Which mag did you read the story in BC?
