Fracking, a good thing or not.

I am surprised that this subject has not been brought up on G.D. What are your views, or alternatives?.

Which is why it is stupid to have core industries in foreign ownership, Water, Gas, Electricity.

The truth of the story is that the two large German energy groups EON and RWE formed a company to build two nuclear power plants in the UK. Following the German government’s decision to wind down their nuclear industry having run scared after Fukashima, EON and RWE which own most of the German plants decided not to invest further in the industry.

Yes, if you are persistent enough and it can’t be proved to affect national security.

I guess this guy knows what he is on about…. Further stated that Eon, earlier this last year gave our Government BILLIONS to enable them to build a nuclear power station. This is only hearsay, but the Germans got to hear about it, complained, created such a stink, that plans were scrapped. Eon lost the lot

The truth, or otherwise, of this somewhat unbelievable tale could easily be established by a Freedom of Information Act enquiry. Such information cannot be hidden these days by D notices and the like.

There is nothing to stop us building nuclear other than government support. If a fraction of the investment in wind and solar was put behind private interest we could have been pouring concrete by now.

Chas, Just listened to the Podcast. Personaly, I can’t see a problem.Folks who are protesting are doing so, because Methane gas pollutes the atmosphere. I worked as a fitter for one year, at Peterboroughs Sewage Farm. It contained many settlement tanks, that had to have air pumped into them 24/7, during this process, methane gas was produced in very large quantities, and stored in a couple of very large Gasometers as we called them. The Methane gas was fed to two very large 6 cylinder diesel engines, and I mean LARGE. We would start the diesels off with diesel fuel, and when a good working temp had been reached, we switched the diesels onto methane from the storage tanks.(The diesels were used to pump air back into all the settlement tanks.) This was burned, so I would imagine that there would be very little Methane left, if any, to escape into the atmosphere. The industrial use of Methane, once set up, would save Industry millions.
Having listened to the views put forward by the experts, made sense to me, and I can’t see any problems, apart from the waste water, that has to be disposed of, however, as my signature at the bottom of this page states………

Sooner or later it will be extracted by one means or another, in the meanwhile we should be building Nuclear power stations to cut our dependency on other people supplying fuel to us.

Information on the inefficiencies of turbines and the subsidies paid is all in the public domain and often quoted here. But unless we repeal the Act and tell Brussels we will withdraw our emissions guarantees they will continue to be built.

Opposite side of the road to me is a small electricity Sub Stn, nearly all day 3 chaps from an independant electricity Company have been moving between the Stn and their vans. I couldn’t resist the urge to go outside and ask them what was going on. They are removing the Sub Stn to another location.
I asked him re sustainable energy, and what was the best in his opinion, I told him I had seen 124 Wind turbine generators at Skeg last week, and he said there will soon be a further, 200+ there, He has been in the trade for over 30 yrs, so I guess this guy knows what he is on about, when he stated that they were a waste of money, but are being bult by Companies who get a large subsidy for building them. He also stated that Solar panels are a rip off. Further stated that Eon, earlier this last year gave our Government BILLIONS to enable them to build a nuclear power station. This is only hearsay, but the Germans got to hear about it, complained, created such a stink, that plans were scrapped.Eon lost the lot, WHAT the hell has Germany got to do with it?

Good thing. It may prevent the lights going out – though I wouldn’t bank on it.

We are just reorganising the kitchen, the (oil) boiler will move to an outhouse and I am insisting it has a facility to power it and the pump via a plug-in generator. When the cuts, which I would guess are a virtual certainty, arrive we’ll at least be warm and able to listen to the (battery) radio by candlelight.

Well of course they will clutch at any straw however thin. Most people do not realise that there have been both oil wells in operation and test fracking in a number of places causing little or no disruption and so hidden from view as to be practically invisible. In any case, as I said, if we want to keep the lights and remain in some control of our energy sources, we have no choice and the quicker the better. And if you want to make the comparison between it and HS2 – the one will help towards reducing our expenditure, the other will require us to borrow a further £35 billion plus.

Well, the “Green Brigade” state that Fracking will make a mess of our Countryside, I think, IF they go ahead with the lunatic idea of the H.S. Rail link, it will be devastation of our Countryside far worse than Fracking.

Not only good but absolutely essential. Since Ed Milliband’s catastrophic Energy and Climate Change Act was passed and the current government has done zilch to amend it we desperately need more sources of energy, to avoid major energy shortages or having to go cap in hand to Russia and other sources to keep our lights on. It has revolutionised energy availability and therefore prices and reenergised industry in the US. It will not have the same effect here but we cannot afford to ignore it. The Greens and their fellow travellers hate it because it is “safe” fossil fuel.
