What do we feel about ransoms being paid for hostage release? For our own family members it probably goes without saying, but is the government right to exclude it? Does it encourage further acts of kidnap?

There probably are those who would trade a family member for a principle, but I’m sure very few, and even less if the family member was a child. Too bad there is sickness going on in our world like this. There are some pretty bad atrocities in those parts that I’ve heard about.

27vet – or would your second thought be counter-productive? I would have agreed with your first thought but I was interested to discover if there were indeed people, like the Doctor, who would be prepared to risk the lives of their loved ones for the greater principle, with which, I presume, most of us agree.

give them money contaminated with anthrax or similar.
Good one centurion, like it:D ![]()

Well obviously most people would pay the ransom, Sky High. There might be a few people on earth who would plot some kind of trick to either get revenge, get the money back, give them money contaminated with anthrax or similar.

It is interesting that no one has actually addressed my question, except the good Doctor. I am not debating how this couple came to be kidnapped, due to their own foolhardiness, but how forumites would react if members of their family were being held hostage, to the prospect of either seeing them languish for months or more in captivity possibly ending in their deaths, or pay a ransom for their release.

Agreed Al. The trouble is that there are too many “humanitarians” out there, and no real incentive for the west (oil etc)

Paying these vermin will just make things escalate. Set them up by sending a benign-looking vessel through their waters, crewed by military personnel armed to the teeth, and slaughter every last one of them.
Then do it again and again…

The questions: –
Governments paying? No.
Sailing near Somalia during a known hijack period, damn stupid in fact bordering thick as pigship.
Strafing the pirates, oh yes yes YES! We should do it, Governments haven’t got the bottle.
Same as the South African native hijackers, just kill them. How hard can it be??? I doubt if paperwork is needed for the body.
It’s their way of life, so removal of it will not hurt anybody. No mourners for that scum, nor the Somali pirates.

lol, say what you like about Ivan, but he does offer a comprehensive punishment to match crime service :diablo:

Believe what you want, that’s how it is.
To reiterate- Going for a trip in your boat of the coast of Somalia is not going to end well, useful safety hint- don’t do it, unless of course you really want to end up on the front page of the daily’s or left to your fate (at my hands or not) .
Totally agree with that, it’s a known problem and people still decide to pop along and then the Government isn’t doing enough to get them back.
I did like the news story a while ago about the pirates that the Russian navy captured though.:diablo:

Madness, now there’ll be even more hostages taken.
Better book a cruise….
I love that website! 😀
But, I do agree with Strangelove in that there’ll be more hostage attempts. Why not? They got their money, so who’s to say they’ll stop at just one old couple enjoying their retirement??
It’s a pity these pirates can’t be dealt with the way they are in the movies – taken out, Rambo-style. Too right our government doesn’t negotiate with terrorists – we just kick **** out of them!
I bet it would reduce, if not stop completely, any kind of piracy in future…

I applaud your degree of principle, if we really are to believe that a beloved member of your family would be be left to their fate, by you.
By: Dr Strangelove - 15th November 2010 at 20:18
same deal.
The pirates would probably pay to get rid of certain members of my family anyway.
I’d like to think that the rest would have the sense not to go boating of the coast of Somalia.
Seriously, not one step back on this, apart from strafing the pirates, that would be worth doing.

….and if members of your family were in that situation?
