From another forum
Is there anyone out there that could help me in finding out further information on the crash site of a USAAF B24 4 engine Liberator Bomber that crashed in Great Horkesley please?
The Museum in Point Clear has a small part of this plane but cannot find out any further information on it.
The clock is running. ๐

And I have already asked if we can get an approximate date.

…. called “N… no, Bob”
Assuming the pool isn’t where the B24 exploded, there is a suspicious mark in the ploughed field to the right….?

Well I’m guessing they had a black labrador ๐ฎ
Once again, thank you all.

If you look at the old maps.co.uk website – In 1880 there is a Ridgenalls just outside of Great Horkesley.
It is still there – but is now a large house with pool…
Marked on the google earth image attached.
Moggy – if you want to know their pets names – you may have to try elsewhere.

No Ridgenhall Farm, but there on the OS there is a Ridgnalls just north of the Gt Horkesley – Boxted road and if you zoom in it looks suspiciously like a one-time farm with converted barns. Not sure how to link, but just type in Great Horkesley and look for the Boxted Road. Given the East Anglian tendency to swallow vowels, I bet Ridgenhall was pronounced “Ridgnall”.
Unfortunately I can’t see the farm in the 1882 directory, so I can’t see if the acreage is given in the occupants entry in the 1881 census, so no idea of how close to the farm it might have been.

Noted. A pint of virtual Adnams is yours. ๐
That was a brilliant response. Now can we turn our attention to the crash site location? Can we define it any more precisely than at present?

94835 (490th BG, “Mandy J III”) No. 1 engine caught fire during
training mission May 29, 1944 with full bombload. Crashed
and exploded at Great Horkesley. Crew bailed out safely,
two suffering injuries.
P.S. I only saw the challenge at 10:04
