Just wondering how forumites rate the various friends groups out there?
There’s a lot from individual aircraft (ML407, Sally B) to organisations (TFC, Tiger Club) to museums (Friends of Duxford, SVAS) and then there’s clubs like the dH Moth Club.
What are your experiences? Good or bad? What would you recommend or advise against?
Cheers!

I can only speak from experience, MH
Yes indeed Melvyn, i too can only speak from experience, and that was my experience.
JDK asked for opinions both “Good and Bad” of Friends groups. It would seem the majority have received positive comments.
I’m not saying the DH Moth club are a “bad” group, merely commenting in my experience with them.

I can only speak from experience, I have called Stuart for advice on Tigers and other DH types and he has always been very helpful.

Quote “I dont own a Moth” nuff said !!
I couldn’t disagree more. I don’t own a Moth, but I just love reading Stuart McKay’s ramblings in The Moth. He is one of the friendliest, loveliest people I know. Additionally, the Woburn Moth Rally is set in stone in my diary. All the Moth owners I know (and there are a few) are some of my favourite people and I wouldn’t particularly consider myself part of a close-knit community..
I dont recall saying Stuart ~isn’t~ a lovely guy… he is, and a gong from queenie to prove it, and the Moth rally is ~the~ place to be, especially as, if your a Chipmunk devotee, Ralphs Chippie Club gives you admission as well (eg: You dont have to be a DH Moth member to get airside)
No, what i said was… and you must have read it, because you near enough said it yourself… is that it’s a very closed knit community dedicated to its current Moth owning membership.
Anybody new seeking help, technical advice, parts etc… 😡 well, nuff said really.

And EAA Warbirds.
And the Royal Aeronautical Society.
And … if I quit all my memberships, I could probably afford that Piston Provost.

My Air Britain membership lapsed some time ago (sorry Jim, if you are reading this), but I loved the lectures. I’ll be back.

Virgin Flying Club
I’ve had so many free flights – I can’t tell you.

Duxford Aviation Society was great until they changed the charge for landing at Duxford. Seriously miffed.

SVAS. Ditto all the good stuff said above.

Friends of the Royal Naval Museum (or whatever they are called).
Great updates as to the progress of their aircraft.
The Swordfish Ball is superb fun too.

RSPB. Ooops. Sorry wrong forum. Still worth joining. Still about flying!
By: Chipmunk Carol - 26th October 2004 at 22:20
Friends of The Fighter Collection. If I had not joined that in 1993, just weeks before the first Flying Legends, I would not have had half the fun I have had around the world. Bless ’em.

The Squadron. It’s worth being a member, just to hug Alan!
Damn good lectures.
Great bar.
Fantastic staff.
First class refuelling efficiency.
Quatlity reenactments of the bombing of Coventry.
Friendly ghosts.

The British Women’s Pilots Association was wonderful when I used to be a member. The great thing is I never heard a single conversation which was sexist. The members were from airlines, ATA, airfield owners, Royal pilots, instructors and aerobatic champions. No wishy-washy girlies there. And men were not excluded. Robert Pooley was a member.

DH Moth Club… not so friendly, very close knit community and reluctant to help even if you ~actually had~ a Tiger Moth.

I did once get a bizzare look from the Mothcateers when I referred to my aeroplane as a Chipmoth. I won’t do that again.
As for Ralph Steiner – ask him about the Lancaster he used to own. Fascinating.

Neil P
many thanks for your appraisal of OAG….I’d like to think we give good value to our members….
although OAG is not a “Friends of” organisation as such,I believe we,and all other enthusiast clubs/societies etc of whatever aviation persuasion are Friends of Aviation….
MoTF…amazed to hear UHAS still around, don’t happen to have contact details for them,Fairford AS also if possible please
