Whats this Mustang the RAf museum have got hold of? Is the other one off to Cosford?
“Spitfire MkXI PL983 has be purchased with ‘a view to long term restoration’.”
I thought it was written off?

I’m usually in agreemant that a fatally written off warbird shouldn’t be rebuilt,as with the Rolls Royce Spitfire project, but from what I hear, the PL983 project will be a little different. There is actually a fair bit more of the original ‘983 in existance than you might imagine after an accident of that severity, and at the same time, the widow of the pilot who was killed has given her blessing to the project,or so I’ve been told.Add to this the fact that photo-recce Spitfires get very little attention or credit and the fact that there are only two other Merlin powered PR models in existance (both in the US,one static at the USAFM) and it becomes to my mind a worthwhile project.

Willow , I’m of the same opinion as yourself , if it is written off it should stay that way , building new airframes and using old data plates is just cynical . If you were killed in a car accident , do you think your wife would want to see the car back on the road – no I think not . This has been debated on here before – it’ll be another flamer – give it another couple of hours.

Is this Mustang currently airworthy in the US then. If so, why is it going on display at Hendon? What’s wrong with the existing Mustang at Hendon (other than the colour scheme)?
I agree with DOUGHNUT. Tell us the whole story.
What possible usable parts are there from PL983. It just makes a mockery of the whole thing. Why not just build completely from scratch using ‘blackout block’ serials and save the heartache of a ‘killer’ aircraft.

Too Slow.
I obviously take far to long with my posts…..

2 Stories.
Mustang 44-74409 is going to be loaned to Hendon with their example going to Cosford whilst it is on Loan.
Will continue to display in the US for this season and then arrive in December in think. (do not know the length of the loan)
PL983 has (or will) join(ed) the restoration queue at HFL.
