“Need a hand to move an 880 & a 990” he says
Ok, close by, got a bit of spare time.
oh…

great, we have a *jack*….

& a fairly stout tug…

So we managed to move the 880 with one wheel on each axle.. including the nose.

Yak 11:
It’s damn near a 2 mile drive from the nearest gate. You can see them from the ramp outside airport cafe by the old tower, but that’s on the other side of the field. No public access.

“Love the 880’s and 990’s, virtually extinct now. Wasn’t the Convair 990 the fastest airliner save for Concorde?
Wonder how the Spantax 990 Coronado restoration project is getting on, haven’t heard anything from Spain for a while….”
Indeed so FLYBUY, and it would of been great to see a Coronado and Concorde parked together in the UK advertising that fact. Both the fastest of their era but completely different designs.

Are any of the aircraft storage areas accessible or visible to people visiting Mojave? I am planning on driving out that way at the start of May.

The cv880 that flew out was way before I went there. Have look on Youtube. Never mind I’m a piston buff, them was the days…

Catalina, lump to the left is the half cockpit/nose that was cut off.
By: ZRX61 - 10th March 2018 at 00:54
There’s an F106 also sitting there & a Catalina that has the nose/cockpit cut neatly in half fore/aft, handful of various Saabs (Drakens, Lansen etc), 3 Hueys, pair of CH 46 Phrogs, some other fighter/trainers I’m not sure about. DH Devon…

Wasn’t even aware that there is a pair of Convair’s still lingering on at Mojave. I did stop to check out the “gate guard 990” some years ago though.

Are those the aircraft that are part of a package recently offered for sale which also included the type certificates?

We need more Convairs in museums. Very beautiful aircraft.

Think the 990 was parked by the hangars in better nick when I visited Mojave… Heck, 19 years ago. The TWA 880s were stored on the north side and I think one subsequently flew out…

Well they aren’t scheduled to be cut up, & while they are owned by a movie prop company, the owner likes old stuff.

Please tell me they’ll be saved! Love the Coronado.

At least the 990 had a full set…

& as it’s a Peruvian aircraft there was talk of pranking the owner with 1gal ziplock full of powdered sugar… “Hey, look what I found… & there’s like 200 more in here….”
990 looks a bit lost among the big stuff…
