Funniest event on board

What´s the most amazing thing occured on a plane while flying?. Well, in my case, something hard to believe. Long ago, flying on a DC-9 from a charter flight (Aviaco, former Spanish domestic and charter airline) from Santiago to Dusseldorf….on cruising two flight attendants came to blows and had to be pulled apart by passengers and the other crew. They weren´t fighting to start serving first…..both had a sentimental relation with the pilot. They had discovered it at that moment. Being nothing dramatic, the show was incredibly funny, like a flying soap opera. I suppose both girls were discharged. The pilot wasn´t really wit. At least, he should try to have different girls but belonging to different airlines:-)

RE: Funniest event on board

When returning from Barcelona back in February, the passengers on the BA A319 aircraft suddenly started laughing. When I looked at the map which shows us where we were, I discovered what the joke was!

As we arrived in London about 20 minutes early and Heathrow could not slot us in, we were told to fly to Biggin Hill and come back, this happened twice. The aircraft performed a series of turns and the red line on the map showing where exactly we were started drawing something that looked just like a penis. When there’s thirty 16, 17 and 18 year olds on board, the joke just never comes to an end!

RE: Funniest event on board

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-06-02 AT 11:56 AM (GMT)]Well, so much for Denmark, they barely put up a fight. Good thing, as I had $200US on England. Suddenly, Tomason looked average and Owen extended his streak of scoring goals on Sorenson to 5 consecutive games. As far as what precautions are done about earthquakes to airports, I would have to say absolutely nothing. Earthquakes are no threat to airports. A little bit of shaking isn’t going to move those very heavy aircraft. The structures themselves are pretty sturdy and they are seemingly retrofitting and making improvements and upgrades constantly to beautify them and make them more customer friendly. I’m sure they are able to withstand a little tremor. Anytime we have a big earthquake, you always hear about some trouble that older highrises experience or older apartment buildings crumbling down. Even during the big S.F. earthquake in ’90 and the Sylmar quake in ’95, you didn’t hear a damn thing about airports experiencing trouble.

RE: Funniest event on board

GD1,

just read your post and I agree, it’s time to end the debate. I was going to say bury the hatchet…. British summer weather has to be seen to be believed. Yesterday it was cloudy all day, intermittent rain yet the temperature was 24 degrees C!

Going back to the funniest event on board, I can give an example of my own bumbling stupidity. This happened in the mid 70’s. I was about 14 at the time and a friend and I were keen spotters and had saved to fly from B’ham (BHX) to Manchester to spend the day spotting there. We flew there and back on a Dan-Air HS748 and had a great time. On the way there and back I sat and watched the zeus fasteners on the cowlings almost screw themselves out of the aircraft and then screw themselves back in.

Anyway, there had been some recent trouble with South Moluccan terrorists and on the flight back there was this Dutch guy who looked a bit suspicious and sat clutching his briefcase to his lap. Halfway through the flight he started fumbling with his briefcase as the sweat poured out of him. By now we were beginning to get a little bit frightened and the stewardess kept asking him if he was alright. Imagine our relief when he finally opened the bag and produced… A cuddly rabbit! It turned out he was scared to death of flying and the toy was given to him by his daughter to keep him company. Smiles all round, until we landed and got off the aircraft. Walking across the tarmac, smug and content after a great day out, I was halfway to the terminal when thud, I slipped and went flying. Surrounded by cabin crew and concerned passengers asking if I was OK, all I could hear was my friend’s laughter as he raced into the terminal.

On the bus from the airport into Birmingham we had just stood up as the bus approached our stop when he braked suddenly and I found myself on the floor again. We got to the railway station for the last leg of our journey home when we jumped on the train with seconds to spare. 20 minutes later we realised we were going the wrong way! There had been a platform alteration and we didn’t know. We finally made it home, but it was a bit of a memorable day.

RE: Funniest event on board

Denmark scare me a bit.

Stig Tofting is a human bulldozer, and the world’s most useless striker (Jon Dahl Tomasson) suddenly became good. Very good and very, very on form. Still, England have the best defence of all the group qualifiers and possibly the best defence at the WC, certainly after the Italians showed themselves up the other day against Mexico.

Can I try and redeem the aeronautical thread – by asking what preacuations have been taken in California against quakes affecting airports? Lots of fuel, lots of long thin bombs with wings, and lots of people all in close proximity…

RE: Funniest event on board

Yeah, the earthquakes are definitely a factor. No biggie, I’m used to them, plus, wood and stucko houses just shake a little bit, they don’t crack and crumble to pieces that that wonderful ‘modern’ architecture displayed in Greece. It’s funny that you mentioned, ‘this has nothing to do with aviation,’ because, it’s amazing how one topic can go off on a tangent to several others. I guess that’s what a forum is all about. As far as the Swedish go, they’re playing well right now. And the Swede coach aint doing too bad either. We’ll see how his boys do against Denmark.

RE: Funniest event on board

GD1,

The Great British Weather is what defines us! Why else would so many Brits emigrate to hotter climes? The rest of the world has the British weather to thank for having to put up with us all!

Besides, I don’t think I would personally like Californian weather all year round. Being of an occassional feeble mind, the Earthquake threat would perturbe me as well.I think the weather up in Sweden is perfect; quite hot (well, occassionally up to 30) in the summer and cold (crisp cold, not wet cold like the UK) the rest of the year.

In fact, nearly everyone I speak to has positive vibes about Sweden (and not just because of Sven-Goran!!). All round, about as close to Utopia as I have ever experienced, anyway.

Sorry – this has absolutely nothing to do with commercial aviation. I’m just in a pro-Swedish mood right now for some reason.

RE: Funniest event on board

Kev,

That’s fair enough. I respect your reasoning and justification, which is a good way to end this particular debate. Perhaps, I came down too hard on you guys, in trying to stick up the lad. As far as ‘hot’ and ‘warm’ goes, my sincerest apologies! The ironic thing is, I was going to make some sort of clarification in parenthesis in regards to the weather. I have a friend in London with whom I converse with regularly, and she pretty much fills me in on how ‘warm’ it is there throughout the year. In fact, I was in London for 4 days last June en route to Greece. Needless to say, with my ultimate destination being the Greek Islands, I didn’t pack any ‘winter’ clothing. I pretty much froze my ass off the 4 days I was in London! And that was June weather, ouch! I guess I didn’t listen to her enough. I live in Southern California, and the weather here is great year around. In winter time here it feels like it did in London in June, no offense.

RE: Funniest event on board

Okay – you’re all about to think that I am an intectually retarded imbecile…..

When I was about 5, I was flying LHR-Bahrain with BA, on one of their old Tristars.

Somewhere over about Egypt I think (maybe skirting round Libya) we got an escort of F-14’s.

At the time, I had a plastic model jet figther (F-4 I think) and I put it by the window, wondering if the F-14 pilots could see it.

After a while, the F-14s peeled away and I got scared out of my little wits. I though they HAD seen my F-4 toy but they thought it was a real F-4 being flown by enemies, so they went to try and shoot it down.

I was on the verge of blurting it out to my Mum, when the Captain announced that due to a technical issue we would be diverting to Cairo. I was so, so scared!

RE: Funniest event on board

well, I’d have to say that the only unusual things I’ve encountered on board flights were

a) British Midland (pre-bmi, about 5 years ago) 737-500 flight from Zurich to Heathrow, during the saftey demonstration, the steward doing the voiceover was very graphic, and proceeded to blow a raspberry into the microphone, demonstrating how the nozzle should be used to top up the lifevest, should extra air be required.

b) British Airways (about 3 years ago) 757 shuttle from Heathrow to Glasgow, on boarding, I remarked to the steward at the door how I hoped the sign was being adhered to, as one of the lightbulbs had obviously gone, and the sign beside the door read (or rather was illuminated only) simply ‘Fasten Seat’. The steward agreed, saying he hoped they were fastened. The pushback was delayed, as there was a problem arming the chutes at the rear doors, and, as I tried to get comfy, I tried to adjust the headrest, but pulled the whole ear of the headrest off the seat (the runner it was on was defective). As I said to the steward, it obvioulsy hadn’t followed the sign, after all…

RE: Funniest event on board

GD1,

First of all, Andrew has contributed well to the forum and is intelligent enough to realise we are not “crucifying” him. Just making a point which is the whole idea of a forum. As I said, I believed Andrew to be much older than 15 judging by the previous nature of posts I have read.

Being in the UK, you have confused me greatly with your mentions of ‘summer’ and ‘warm.’ This is something we rarely see, unless I’ve been issued with my own personal raincloud which follows me everywhere. If you want to talk about crucifixion you should have been here a few months ago.

Thanks for support guys!

I didnt think it was the funniest event on the board as i thought that was supposed to refer to the first Post. I just merly thought it was slightly amusing. Maybe when we heard the french police expolding bagge and though a bomb had just gone off at Nice Airport would have been a better topic to post?

RE: Funniest event on board

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-06-02 AT 12:44 PM (GMT)]Kev, I do not happen to find anything humorous about Andrew’s situation. Why? Because come summertime when it gets warm, females begin wearing short little skirts or dresses(in the U.S. they do, at least) and many of them fail to cross their legs in public settings. Not that it is hot in a airline cabin setting, by any stretch of the imagination, but I’m guessing that’s not the first time that has happened either. The bottome line is, it is not a rare occurrence(again, at least not in the U.S.). I was merely pointing out that Andrew thought it was funny, which is obviously why he posted it. And why did he do that, because the topic read “funniest event on board.” That happened to be the one he thought was humorous, therefore, he posted it. What I find amusing is that you, and a few others, obviously took offense to this, and consequently referred to him as a 12 year old. Perhaps you should have heeded the warning that he gave at the very beginning of his post, and not continued to scroll down. As far as indescretion goes, who’s the innocent person here? The token flight attendant, or Andrew who is 15 and practically crucified at this point? Perhaps, we should put an age limit on this thing and you don’t have to worry about other ‘immature’ posts in the future.

RE: Funniest event on board

Andrew,

some of your posts are very interesting. I was being sarcastic about you being 12 years old as I thought you were considerably older than that. I fail to see the relevance in telling me you have an IQ of 149, after all, it was your maturity I was questionong, not your intelligence.

“We were talking about funny events, and that was one of them. Why is this issue even being addressed on an aviation forum? Let it go people.
GD1″

I fail to find anything amusing in taking advantage of a persons innocent indiscretion. Can you please explain to me in which context you find this funny?

Andrew, I wish your Father a speedy recovery and hope you have a great weekend at Farnborough.

Drew, don’t listen to any of these people that are bashing you. They would have done the same thing. What, are you a ‘gentlemen’ for not noticing or not looking if you do? Give me a break. I’m twice your age and I would have done the same thing. Why? Because, I’m a heterosexual, and married or not, if an attractive female is ‘flashing,’ so to speak; then damnit, I’m looking! And so what that you posted in on a forum of hundreds. We were talking about funny events, and that was one of them. Why is this issue even being addressed on an aviation forum? Let it go people.

By the way I am 15 not 12 and I shall let you know my IQ is in the top 1% of 15 year olds in the UK and I have documents to prove it!! (its 149 btw)

I mean come on, your slagging me off but what would you have thought at the time. I bet not all of you would have told the Crew Member!

Kev,

I know, that was the point of my second line about not telling wives/gf’s.

I just found it quite amusing that Andrew was pounced on! I was no better at his age as most men will probably admit.

Still…you’ve gotta question her motives. Did she make eye contact with you Andrew ????????
