I’ve seen details of a new memorial at RAF Barkston Heath, but the following BBC news items indicates that it may be more than a memorial http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lincolnshire-27130172
I believe that the Barkston Heath project fits into this new initiative http://www.lincolnshiretoday.net/en/lt/heritage/1738/Bomber-County-brought-to-life-in-new-publications.htm
I understand that in early May a new memorial will also be unveiled at Witham St Hughs to commemorate RAF Swinderby.

The local BBC website now has the 617 Squadron memorial story – http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lincolnshire-32608704

The central ‘inscribed’ panel seems to have come adrift – the Horncastle News has a news feature but be careful if you open the link it comes up with loads of adverts!

Sad news if the case and hard to picture as it is such a substantial memorial.

Reports on twitter that the main 617 Squadron memorial at Woodhall Spa has partially collapsed – not believed to be vandalism.

XS186 looks really good – early doors at the Aeroboot / Aerojumble (doors open at 9am) then over to Metheringham perhaps! 🙂

Thanks TO23!
Just a heads up for those around the area next Saturday (we are only half an hour from Newark!) we are planning an engine / taxy run next Saturday between 11.00-11.30am.
Why not get up close and personal with the best JP you’ll see anywhere.

Apologies Paul I forgot our discussion last month when you guys visited NAM and I was forgetting your ‘independence’.
As you know I’m with your view of promoting “the wider region’s very comprehensive aviation offering” and long may it continue. Good luck with hooking up with AHL, they’re still doing a brilliant job – now with funding for another year!! :applause:

TO23 – the Visitor Centre at Metheringham do have regular school groups visiting their facility which is great.
I was taking a slightly different slant, referring to our own independant and ‘hands on’ operation of XS186, which is on a smaller scale…… though a significantly noisier one!
We want to promote a more granular level understanding of how a vintage aeroplane works, and have recently linked in with AHL to widen our audience and let the wider community see what we are up to. It all add’s to Lincolnshire’s and the wider region’s very comprehensive aviation offering!

Paul, have you had many school groups visiting? IIRC Metheringham did a lot over the Christmas period.
NAM’s education offer has been doing OK through the AHL scheme – this month I’ve hosted circa 180 pre-school / early years pupils from one academy near Gainsborough.
They did a split visit with NAM and RAF Scampton, I delivered principles of flight sessions with them in Hangar 2 at NAM and they went in the Wessex – a lot more are also booked in throughout March!

If that works out i’ll be participating, a great way to engage our newest generation in our heritage – we see precious few of them out in the wilds of Lincolnshire and try very hard to get youngster’s actively involved.

I thought that it was quite striking and if it went ahead I think that it might be visible to passing road traffic as you come round past the fire station that is close to the stadium.
I recall some fond memories of a local radio presenter / journalist who once told me that his ideal day would be commentating on Lincoln City sat at their Sincil Bank stadium, watching steam trains in the local railway sidings and Vulcans in the circuits at RAF Waddington and RAF Scampton.

Nice idea and very fitting too, given the towns links!

Another interesting ‘aviation’ item from Lincolnshire if you get past the headline you’ll find the historic aviation connection http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lincolnshire-30828736 – pity they weren’t able to mention IX(B) Squadron though, which might have been more appropriate!! 😉

Anyone for a “Control Tower”, lovely sea views? 😀
