Fury Colour Schemes

A friend is building an Isaacs Fury and has reached the covering stage. He wants to use a camouflaged scheme as used by 43sqd during the Munich crisis. This was camouflaged fuselage and wing upper surfaces with black and white on the undersides of the wings.

The RAF are happy for him to use this scheme but the CAA say NO. This is because none of the pictures he has show any sqd markings or serial numbers just the sqd crest. The CAA say he cant have an unidentified aeroplane. Does anyone have any pictures which show any markings for this type of colour scheme?

I hope someone can help, it would be great to see one in this type of camouflage. Many thanks

Ken

The Flight sequence is here:

Go back and forward for more shots of them. I’m afraid it looks pretty conclusive there were no serials or numbers visible. One wonders how the pilots jumped into the correct Fury!

Good luck.

Many thanks for the input, I think my friend has the book mentioned as its probably where he had the idea from. He did consider putting a made up registration but wants its authentic and in any case the error would be pointed out the first time the completed aeroplanes picture was published.

He has considered the trainer version with the camouflage tops and yellow undersides as these had serial numbers but the Black and white undersides would be so different.

He is doing some research at Hendon before giving up so fingers crossed.

Thanks again for the help

There is an alternative in that a number of Furys were used by the Training units after 1938- one I recall at Montrose – these had camo’d upper but yellow lower surfaces

Interesting. There is a series of Flight photos of Munich furies on their website. Have a look. AFAIK, they were all anonymous. You could compromise by adding ‘K1234’ on the wing underside and rear fuselage, although ‘incorrect’.

If you just want the camouflage, you could try the 43 Sqn SAAF, Yugoslav Fury, Spanish Civil War Fury, or Danish Nimrod.

Do you have our book on the Fury? I don’t think we have stock, but if your favourite all-good-bookshops doesn’t have it, drop me a PM.
