I’ve been looking at the specs for the UAE’s Block-60’s, and I’m wondering how long the F-16 phenomenon can stay hot on the international market against the F-35.
Firstly – price. Am I right in saying that is cheaper to buy F-16’s (No development costs), and considerably lower investment in integration if the potential buyer already owns Falcons?
I look at the Falcon/Viper design, and I have to consider the possibility that methods and types of technology available to upgrade new market F-16’s would evolve just like the development of new types like F-35, and that say, a future Block-80/90 F-16 would appear to rival the type on the market circa 2015.
I say this because the Falcon is one of the most popular and best selling aircraft of all time in the jet age.
Obviously, F-35 had major stealth assets that no F-16 has, but I doubt this would apply to export F-35’s outside US/UK/Israel.
The F-16 could “stealthify” in much the same way has been attempted with other 3rd gen aircraft, by application of existing RCS-reduction techniques, and perhaps an increase in passive sensor capability.
