Currently the Egyptian Air Force finds itself in an interesting position.
There are the survivors of 240 F-16s delivered from 1980s as well as 18 Mirage 2000s.
However there are still 200 obsolete MiG-21/F-7/F-4E/Mirage 5 in service as well.
The helicopter fleets are similar – AH-64, UH-60, CH-47 and newer Mi-17s backed up by largish numbers of vintage Mi-8s and Sea Kings.
There has recently been some consternation in the USA about ongoing sales of F-16s.
In any case F-16 line is coming to an end in the near future and as stated there are 200 obsolete jets that need replacing.
So what direction will future EAF pursue and especially with regards to fighters?
– New build/second hand F-16?
– F/A-18E/F?
– JF-17? (Egypt has licence produced large numbers of K-8s)
– Eurocannard?
– MiG-29?
– Su-30?
