FW190 Recovery(2008 thread)

Just came across this site, and thought it was too interesting not to share –

“On 1 November 2006, a Fw 190A3 was salvaged from the depths off the island of Sotra, near Bergen, Norway”

Many thanks Matt… shame to emblem isn’t visible on that footage. If anybody has access to any period shots of this emblem, please feel free to post them. We have had this ex-eBay image posted on the LEMB but we are still unable to get a nice clear shot to determine exactly what the emblem consisted of…

The search continues 🙂

I’ll probably get my knuckles rapped for resurrecting an old thread… but now that we’re two years down the line, can anybody provide me with photos of this Fw190 on display at the Herdla Museum, especially of the 12./JG5 emblem?

Before anybody posts them, I’ve seen all the post-recovery shots of this bird (and associated profiles) but none of her since she was cleaned up. All I’ve been able to find of her on display is this, so any pointers greatly appreciated… 🙂

I was honored to meet some of the recovery team and see some of the bits of the aircraft on a visit to Norway a few months after the AC had been recovered. It was in water tanks being flushed with fresh water. The metal is VERY delicate with corrosion being a great concern. Also, steel rivets holding aluminum panels was an ongoing concern. They were, at the time, pondering just how to best preserve for display.

It will never fly again. I am pretty sure of that.

In my (although somewhat limited) expirence with aircraft skin and salt water, I would guess that nothing could be made airworthy.

However, it could possibly clean up nicely for display.

Recovered FW190

Yes seen this before, I cant decide if the the paint is still on that means
the metal could be cleaned up like new or its panels are in variable states
of preservation.
Shame it wasnt a Typhoon/Tempest!:diablo:

Great to see it emerge from the depths and in such apparent good condition, are there any pictures after it has been cleaned off ? And for you chaps in the know, is it straightforward finder’s keeper, or who would have legal claim to the aircraft after all these years ?
