G-MIMA

Jemima, the 146 which nearly every one living on the Isle of Man has used (which I moaned about recently, for it is horrible inside) is regarded fondly by the operator, Manx Airlines (now British Airways CitiExpress Isle of Man Ltd).

I attach a pic, together with one of the first Manx jet, G-OJET. This one is a 146-100 (Jemima is a newer 146-200) and I remember a flight to Liverpool as a 7 year old. It was very comfortable in those days!

G-OJET is now operated by an Indonesian carrier.

BA’s domestic 752’s no longer have air nozzles, either, although the European ones do.

I find it a funny inside. Too tall and really narrow. Portugalia Pitch is ok, and the seat confort is OK, but it seems that it´s going to turn over in the skies. I also flew Naysa ones in the Canary Islands and these versions are even worse since they are twice short as far as cabin tall is concerned. So like a box.

The picture above is a D model Beech 1900 which has significantly more headroom than the C model. Makes it look damn ugly though!

The only Beech 1900’s I’ve flown on have been those operated by Zambian Airways. I’ve taken maybe 10 or 12 flights, and they are extremely comfortable. More legroom than a J41 and lots more elbow room. Maybe Portugalia have a different configuration?

Metro is a torture, like a flying coffin. And the B1900 not really nice neither. I flew B1900 (Portugalia) and I didn´t enjoy it. Too narrow and a funny aspect inside. I flew the Saab 340 and according to the seat arrangemet it should be as wide as the J41.

J41 is a horrible aircraft to be a passenger in. Not so bad height wise, but too narrow for 3 seats across.

The Beech 1900 is a great deal more comfortable. Never tried any others in this category, such as the Metro though.

On a completely different note – all the BA 747-400’s which I have been on in the last 2 years have not had an air nozzle above the seats, like they used to.Other airlines sill seem to have them. Any ideas why?

Well the EGNM J41 flights spread not so far but wide!!

The 4 based J41’s we have here fly to Isle of Man (1x Daily), Dublin (6x Daily), Gatwick (3x Daily), Aberdeen (2x Daily) and Southampton (2x Daily), with the new Britsol route (3X Daily to start kin August!!!

A few years back I flew JER-ORK on a Manx J41.The flight was smooth but very uncomfortable in the 1×2 seat combination.At first there were numerous comments by other passengers concerning the size of the aircraft taking us up to Cork,however,the flight was fine though the weather was good when we travelled so I would say it could be quite bumpy on a bad day going over the Irish sea.

Thanks. I have always wanted to fly J41. I thought it was necessary to get almost bended, but it seems that the cabin is 1,80m tall, so pretty good for my 1,73m. How is flying this small plane?. It seems to me that it shouldn´t be very stable flying over the rough waters of the Irish sea.

Most people don’t seem to be very bothered by the change.

The only controversial thing has been the axing of the LHR flights.

All the aircraft are still in the old Manx decor inside, and the personnel are all the old Manx ones. Inflight meals are still much better than BA! We used to get a piece of chocolate shaped like the Manx flag (3 legs) which was nice.

Also, the Manx inflight magazines used to always feature 1 or 2 people I know – because the Isle of Man is such a small place! I think we will be getting the standard BA reading material in a few months.

Great pics Mongu. Being Manx a part of BA now, would that means that Manx airways colours have gone away?. No more, the nice celtic designs on the tails?. I suppose the people from IOM aren´t particularly amused by this change.

I’ve only seen G-MAJA in the IOM about twice! J41 wise, we usually get G-MAJD which is in BA colours. It usually operates to Dublin, Belfast and Birmingham.

Mainstay of the Manx fleet is the ATP – 3 aircraft in service. A fourth is owned but operated by someone else, probably another part of BA. They are actually preferable to the 146, as the seats are (believe it or not!) wider.

I really like the kinda currant manx scheme – the J41 G-MAJA which is supposedly owned by Manx seems to b based at NM even tho it only flies 1x daily.

Here at Nm it’s like EMB/Jetstream city with 4 of each based with often a spare J41 parked u either bust (regular) or as a spare in case 1 of em busts (just as regular!!!)
