Another dimensional question.
Are there different size Gyro Compasses as would be found in a Lincoln bomber? I have an accurate photo of 1 that has been scaled and shows it as being 4 5/8″ tall by 4 1/2″ wide although a friend has 1 that appears to be 4 7/8″ tall and 4 1/2″ wide. See the attached photos.
There is no disputing the fact that the 4 7/8″ tall one exists but I’m questioning if it is the right one for a panel I am recreating as I am running out of space and it’s fouling the BFP mounting holes.
So the question is, is there a version of the gyro compass that is only 4 5/8″ tall? If so what is it called and is there a specific stores ref? The 1/4″ difference could be very important.
Thanks again Paul

I actually managed to purchase one of the compasses I need and for reference of those who have helped me here are the details;
RAAF Unit Gyro G3 G6B/500129
Gyro Code V.951 for GM2 compass system
I have seen these fitted to RAAF Vampires as well.

Here are some pictures of the GM7 Pilots Heading Repeater and GM7A Type as fitted to the Shackleton (and identical in external size to the G4F & G4B types) Also shown a G4B Type C with the autopilot monitor sticking out the back.

Hi Terry, I’ve asked my friend with the unit for any part numbers etc.. but he hasn’t got back to me yet. And fly.buy, I can’t see that instrument in any of the Shack cockpit photos that google throws up.
Cheers Paul

I always thought the prefix on the Mk4 GM compass ‘F’ was for fighter and ‘B’ Bomber. From memory the Avro Shackleton had the MK7 Square GM compass, I think this was the same size though but visually differed by having blue exterior dials.
Looking at your photos I always thought the MK4 GM compass had the two thumb dials positioned horizontally as opposed to vertically as shown in your plan drawing. Perhaps the cockpit photo layout was an anomaly for positioning of that particular compas?

What you have there is not a standard Sperry “G4 series” gyrosyn compass. I am afraid I do not recognize it. Does it have an RAF Section and reference number? Or a part number?

Hi Terry
Maybe I have the designation wrong. The one I am interested in goes in a square hole rather than round as your drawing shows, here is a pic of the front where you can see the raised portion that goes into the cutout. The mounting holes in your drawing match those for the 4 7/8″ tall ‘square’ one my friend has.
If anyone can point me in the right direction I’d be very grateful.

I am not aware of any higher version of the basic G4 Gyro Unit. Sizes seem the same for the CL1, CL2, G4F, G4B, G4FT and CL6/SP3 versions. The G4FT Gyro Unit Type C 6B/2708 had a protrusion at the rear containing an autopilot heading error monitor pick off for the A/Pilot Mk 14 or type X23 (whatever that was!) And the CL6 Gyro Unit 6B/3750 used with an SP3 autopilot had a similar appearance pick-off.
