I saw a clip on You Tube where a Robbie 44 just got airborne when the main rotor appeared to break off halfway along its length. There appeared to be a family on board. It reached about 10 feet then fell abruptly to the ground, but the outcome is unknown as that is where the video stopped.

We had a fatal R-22 mishap at our local GA field two weeks ago, the first serious crash in many years at the busy GA airport.

The NTSB has said what was already evident from TV reports, the main rotor blade severed the tailboom while the solo student pilot was doing circuits.
It will be interesting to see the final report in several months.

The local helicopter school is always busy, they had 3 R-22s and two R-44s.

Not a good month in the US.

RUIDOSO, N.M. — At least five people were killed and two others were injured when a twin-engine plane overshot a runway while landing and crashed Thursday at a regional airport in south-central New Mexico, federal and local authorities said.

NY Times report

There seems to be a lot of midair collisions in the USA, more than in other places. Do they not look out, transmit their position on the radio and listen for other aircraft? Or is it increased probablility due to the number of aircraft operating there?

I think it’s because:
1. The US probably has more GA traffic than the rest of the world combined
2. Most fields are uncontrolled…yes, they use unicom but if the pattern is busy, accidents do happen. You’re a pilot, you know it’s harder to see planes in the pattern than it might seem.

Having said that, there has been 3-4 mid airs in the past couple of years.
Usually two planes on final.
I can see how it happens…youu have just got to be careful.

Could be just a bad patch of them.

Here’s another from Saturday. I flew into the airport only two weeks ago.

WILLISTON, Fla. — A mid-air plane collision Saturday morning left three people dead near the Marion-Levy county line.

Two small planes hit each other near the Williston municipal airport. The airport is about 85 miles from Orlando.

Officials said one plane took off from Williston airport. The other was some type of experimental plane that was flying from Ocala. Investigators said the plane from Ocala was about to land at the airport.

Both planes crashed in a rural field. The crashes left a path of wreckage about half a mile wide.

At first, a woman who lives nearby didn’t know what had happened.
“I just heard a bang,” eyewitness Debbie Phillips said.

Authorities said 73 year-old Lee Sentman of Marion County died in the crash. He is believed to be the pilot of the experimental plane. The other two victims names haven’t been released.

Federal Aviation Administration officials are investigating crash.

It wasn’t his day.

Plane hits man jogging on beach

South Carolina – A single-engine plane with oil on its windshield struck and killed a man on a Hilton Head beach Monday afternoon as the pilot was attempting to make an emergency landing, authorities said.

The man was walking or jogging along Palmetto Dunes when the Experimental Lancair IV-P plane hit him, said Hilton Head Island fire and rescue spokeswoman Joheida Fister….

NTSB report says plane’s right wing broke apart before fatal Monmouth airport crash

New Jersey Real-Time News

Another needless loss. One way or the other. That is to say, either due to the excessively high speed flypast or poor maintenance.

Two threads merged at the OP’s request.

The one in Austin calls to mind the Michael Douglas movie – Falling Down.

Very sad, both of these.
