GAF Canberra A84-226 on the move

Hi all

One of our latest acquisitions, a GAF Canberra – A84-226, gifted to us by the RAAF, has begun its journey from Base Wagga to our Museum today.

It will arrive sometime Sunday afternoon traffic permitting but should be a bit of a showstopper as it moves through suburban Melbourne. The wings are leaving a day later and have to be moved into Melbourne between 2am and 6am due to oversize regulations.

Here’s a happy snap as it left the base today. We look forward to welcoming it to its new home this week, with the Australian built Mustang to follow in the next couple of weeks

Cheers

Very good news.
How well did it come apart for the journey Ewan?

Rob

Hey Rob

All went perfectly until the wing pins. Pretty notorious by the sounds of it, but the first one was ok. Then we ended up breaking every single one of our pullers we had brought for the journey, so after much deliberation between ourselves and talking with the guy in charge on base we made the decision to get the fire recuse unit in to help us cut the spar. We were gutted by this, but had no choice. Ultimately it means a little bit more work at our end when we re assemble the wings etc, but no one visiting would notice the difference anyway. Sometimes you have to make hard choices and when there is a five hour drive each way and time restraints to have the aircraft off base, we simply have to do what we can to get the aircraft home

Cheers

Made it to the Museum just now 🙂 Here is a cracking shot of it last night on stopover just south of the VIC/NSW border. Thanks to Gerard Blom for the shot.

Moorabbin is turning from a great little Museum into a great, big Museum, well done.
