When I was working out the move, it turns out that on the back of a low loader, it would be possible to keep it intact for a move! That would be a sight through those country lanes as you said!

You’ve come to the same conclusion as I did, we (Historic Aero Recovery) were tasked with quoting a move on a Gannet sometime back and although the job fell through, it was possible without dismantling but getting a Transport order (VR1) was difficult due to the width.

When they were built at Hayes they were trucked to Northolt and White Waltham for their first flight, all that was removed was the outer wings, the remaining fusalage was rotated in a jig (roughly 30 degs) and this allowed the load to fit down small roads. Have pics of one on a Thames Trader somewhere. I think the Heaton Chapel built ones might have been trucked to Ringway aswel, but not sure.

On you tube is the truck move of XA459 to W. Waltham, here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLvo9iLVXpA

Looks like we are still none the wiser as to where its moving to. I would love to see a Gannet on the move through the Cornish country-side. especially through some of the narrower streets that the Police insist you use.

Anyway back to the Gannet, someone must know something?!
She might not be the best example (I’m guesing Duxfords is), but she has been looked after, and is worthy of onward preservation and a good home.

Camberra man, no wonder your Gannet is in good nick, isn’t that the one the Navy paid to have removed from Prestwick, roaded to RNAS Yeovilton and had it lightly restored and painted, and then decided they wanted to sell it!
Glad it is preserved in a worthy collection though. I think you will find the AEW pilots canopy, though similar in appearence to an AS type, is taller. Good luck in your search.

Hi

We have a Fairey Gannet at the Dumfries Aviation Museum ex HMS Gannet at Prestwick. It is in fairly good condition but there is a fist sized hole in the canopy, some one must have one lying around unloved but available! Also we are in need of Wessex bits and pieces. We’re all born scroungers in this trade!!

Ken

You’re not born scroungers, I’ve heard rumours that the PC brigade feel the term is derogatory so you are now to be called resourceful parts location/acquisition persons. 😀 😀

Right,

I’ve had a tidy up, and removed all references to an outburst against NEAM.

Please keep the thread on topic.

Back to the Gannet

Sorry Bruce 🙂

Given that the Gannet is not going to either NEAM or RAF Millom, is there any definite news on where it is off to?

Gannet ECM.6 XG831

I hope we can assume from this that the Gannet will be saved?

The Gannet is due to move within the next 10 days or so, if a certain item of equipment can find its way to Flambards, as for where its going, sorry no idea.

The Gannet isn’t in too bad a nick, clambered around it myself recently. Undercarriage is probably the main sufferer.
It does deserve to stay in Cornwall, but not sure there is any indoor venue?

It would be nice for it to stay in Cornwall. However does Cornwall have any track record for preseving a Gannet inside ?

This is very sad new, this Gannet has served, and has been preserved at Culdrose / Helston since at least the late ’50s. The only one to remain in Cornwall it deserves to stay in the area as a memory of the crews that flew them from here.
I am genuinley surprised that Flambards have decided to get rid, I just hope the T.4 Shack Fusalage isn’t next!

Think there is a previous thread on this aircraft somewhere, I thought she was going North to the NEAM at Sunderland, coorect me if I am wrong please.

You’re wrong.

We decided that it was too expensive, too poor condition, we have nowhere to put it, and we were advised that it had been sold or allocated before we had a chance to see it properly. Sorry – its not coming here….
