Whilst clearing out an old garage I came across a box of tools.
A wooden box, about a foot square containing 4 reamers & 4 go/nogo gauges, what looks like 2 guides and what I assume is the operating tool for the reamers. There appears to be about 4 items missing from the box.
One reamer I unwrapped is marked:-
‘Reliance’ , 48107, R OOY 17, 1.005 DIA. Etched alongside is ‘DH 861’
Another one is similarly marked :-
‘Reliance’, 48109, R OOY 18, 1.010 DIA. Etched alongside is ‘DH 861’
The guide is marked:-
‘Reliance’, R OOY 21, 48111.

Does anyone know which aircraft or engine they might have been used on?
I assume that being etched ‘DH 861’ they are probably from the DeHavilland company.

Okay, here is some more info.
The reamers are sized :- 1.005″, 1.010″, 1.015″ & 1.020″.
The 4 go/nogo gauges are sized to the reamers.
The large ‘T’ shaped tool is a turning tool for the reamers. A square socket with a square headed locking bolt at one end.
The other end is a hand sized tube handle which turns along it’ length. Further investigation revealed spring loaded ratchet teeth near where the turning bar joins the main body. Designed, I think, to get into a tight space. The teeth on the ratchet were very coarse.
The whole kit is very heavy.

Apart from the oil can missing from the bottom of the box, it looks like there are 3, maybe 4 items missing from the lid of the box.

Nice find, and Reliance has been a tool manufacturer long enough for this to be one of theirs?

Well, Alan would know!
CS, do you want to sell it? It would be nice to add to the collection.

RRRRR gets more interesting. Agree with Creaking Door, definitely on the oil can. That has to date box to 1950’s—60’s. CS, Would you mind unwrapping the Spanner/tool and post pics. in here ? It looks something like a RR Avon Spanner I have somewhere buried in loft. The kit is remarkable, brand new and looks unused.

You could try sending an email with links to those photos to : Technical@dehavillandmuseum.co.uk
If they are de Havilland tools than they may know more about them.
Cheers…

I can’t add more. It might well be a wing spar bolt reamer. Be useful to know what all the sizes were. I don’t know the significance of ‘Reliance’

I’ll bet the thing missing from bottom-left was a ‘banjo’ oil-can.

Senior Citizens united !!!!!
Just hang in there a while, Bruce and Co Might well chime in soon. Is that wrapped item in lid a spanner of some sort ? Makes me think they could be Wing Spar Bolt hole reamers.

Bill,
Yes, nice bit of kit.
Unfortunately pretty useless if I can’t find out what it is used for/on 🙁
