Gardermoen

In a few weeks time, I’ll be making a one day trip to Gardermoen in Norway. Target is the aviation museum there, but gathering info on it from the internet isn’t very succesfull so far. My main question is how to get from the airport to the museum. Can this best be done by walking , bus , taxi? Another question is the light inside the museum, is a tripod needed or is handheld photography possible with 100 or 200 iso? Thanks for any info. BW Roger

I tried to organise it on a weekend, but it wasn’t possible due to the fact that the flights that made a one day trip possible, didn’t fly during the weekend. Which ment it was going to be a 2 or 3 day trip, this, together with the fact that the friday and monday flights were 3 times the cheap price of the tuesday, wendnesday and thursday price, we prefered the tuesday.

However, on the brigh(er) side, I am already organising a likewise trip to the museum in Rome, on a saturday.

Well, it took some time to organise, but coming Tuesday we (a mixed group of Dutch ARG and belgian BAHAAT members (including some known posters here)) will be visiting the museum. Flying in from Amsterdam with the morning flight, and departing the same afternoon. Guess around 4 hrs is “enough” to do the museum. BW R

Youre right:-).I had a seldom opportunity to climb into the HE 111 P2 and tried the pilot seat and one of the gunners positions.
Im also got a closer look at the Ju 88s and the cockpit area were pretty cramped

It’s a lovely display but shame it’s not going to be a flyer though. 🙁

No.

I have spoken with the project manager for the restoration of the He111 numerous times about this aircraft and he never mentioned this.
The only aircraft the Norwegian Defence Museum have had airworhty that I know of is Saab Safir LN-FMU (grounded in early 90’s because of cost of operation AFAIK) and the Catalina now displayed in Bodø.
The Catalina was airworthy when aquired, restored to authentic WWII configuration and flown for a few weeks in the summer of 1994 (displayed at the 1994 Gardermoen airshow) before it was flown to Bodø for static display.

The next event at the museum that I know of, is our Warbirds of Norway fly-in the 17th september (weather permitting). I do not know if the shop doors will be open then, but I would say it is a fairly good chance for it.
Anyhow, if you visit that day, you will have chance to see a few airworthy veterans in the museum backyard as a bonus.. 🙂

Did the Catalina not have its wings cut of to fit into the museum at Bodø? I have heard this, and because of that it will never fly again. 😡

I thought that this was going to be a flyer. I remember an article a few years ago when the original crew went to see the restoration and there was also one of the Skua pilots there. Was there any plans at all to put this back in the air?

5. Heinkel He 111P c/n 1526 built in 1938. As 5J+CN in KG 4 flying from Oslo/Fornebu it was attacked and damaged by Blackburn Skuas operating from HMS Ark Royal. It foirce landed near Digervarden, south of Lesjaskog. The surviving 3 crew members were captured and spent the rest of the war as PoWs in Canada. The remains were recovered in 1976 and restored to almost original condition, as seen here.

Thanks for the info. Soon we (a small delegation of 2 aircraft/aviation archeology museums) are making a 1 day visit to Gardermoen, and seeing the salvaged Junkers ( and maybe some other machines) in the workshop is one of our reasons to go there. I think I’ll mail the museum when a date is known. What can be expected during the Fly-in at the 17th? I don’t know that much on the Norwegian vintage aviation scene. If interested, I might drop in for a few hours. BW Roger

The workshop is usually closed to visitors, but they often let people in there when there is some kind of event going on at the museum.
I guess it’s a matter of having enough staff to take care of the safety/security.

Is the workshop open for the public, or does one need a special permission? BW Roger

I missed this thread first time around, fabulous stuff.
I’m wondering if there are cheap flights from Amsterdam, maybe linked with cheap flights from UK to Amsterdam…..
Do-able from UK – perhaps over a couple of days???

I visited the museum at Gardermoen today and had the opportunity to take a look in the workshop and thought I should post a couple of pictures.

Facts about the work going on in the workshop and more pictures can be found here: www.ju88.net

Just went by the air museum this afternoon. Found the A-26 sitting by the side of the museum hangar. Now being masked getting ready for a repaint. It will then hopefully look as good as when it first arrived in Norway in 1988. According to a museum worker the plane also had an engine (or two) changed. Hope to see it fly one of these days!

The A-26 is still fully airworthy, seen it last in the sky in may.
