Gate guards – where are they?

What happened to the gate guards from the bases which closed in the last few years, ie Coltishall? What is the future for the spitfire f21 at cottesmoore?

It’s used as a display airframe with a board in front of it showing it’s operational history. Her cockpit is quite complete.

For its work with Bomber command? 😉

So what do they use her for? Squadron reunions I guess? Any idea what her cockpit is like?

It did have a complete Griffon but later had a mix of exhaust stubs.

It escaped the gate guard swop because it belongs to the Association i.e they bought it from the Mod years ago so it’s not an Mod airframe. Twenty years ago when I first looked at it there was handfuls of corrosion in the wheel wells -undoubtedly she could be rebuilt but she is in good hands.

Has she got a correct engine fitted?

I used to look after LA255 at Wittering in the l970’s. The F.21 was aquired from Cardington and I believe had a spell at West Raynham before going to Wittering. A number of the “incorrect” items were swopped for items “borrowed” by Dick Melton for the BBMF at Coltishall. I personally delivered it’s main wheels to Colt for use on a Mk.19, in exchange for a pair off a Mk.5. It used to stand outside the Sqn hangar but was put away inside in the wintertime..

1 squadron wouldnt let it go!

Its a Spitfire – if it has corrosion, it can be fixed!

As for the Spitfire F.21 -it has serious corrosion in the wings and is missing a number of parts including correct windscreen and rear view mirror. It’s similarily pleasing to the eye but unrestored to any great depth.

David, I take it that this one is kept indoors? How did it escape the gate guardian recovery all those years back?

The Jag is strafing County Hall low level, which can only be a good thing, if only it had some iron bombs 😎

Sorry Sadsack ! The Jaguar is 1.13 miles from the geographic centre of Norwich as defined by Multimap . It’s postal location is NR1 2DH -as for it’s condition -it’s made out of sundry parts of damaged Jaguars (done in RAFG) so I guess it’s pleasing to the eye but contains little of substance.

Far from being in the middle of Norwich, the Jaguar is in the grounds of County Hall, where it remains in good shape. (Not that I’ve ever seen the thing!!)

Actually it is on the outskirts of Norwich at County Hall, here:

…but the satellite view is not up to date enough to show it.

Coltishall Spitfire SL542 was last heard on in Canada – the Spitfire F.21 that belongs to No.1 Squadron Association will undoubtedly take the short trip back to RAF Wittering when the Squadron moves
