A visit to my parents and an inquiry about an old shot I remembered from some 25 years ago of a crashed He111 unearthed this series of images my dad took while stationed at Gatow in ‘47/48.
Not really had a chance to find out more details other than the basic info written below each shot in the album or what I think they are. Happy to be corrected on any of the images
Anyone else have family or friends who were based at Gatow in 1947/48 or pictures/info from this period that I could show my dad
1-3 – Dakotas / DC3’s
4-5 – DF Truck
6 – Fw-189
7 – HP Halton

Nice pics Chris,
The Halton is in fact a C Mk VIII G-AIHX serial PP294, it crashed 03.09.1948 at Squires Gate during a night landing. Haltons had a solid nose fairing.

Thanks from me too for posting these atmospheric photos from a very interesting period. The Tempest Vs are from 3 Squadron, not 33. 3 Sqn was the only one to retain Tempest Vs when the other Tempest squadrons re-equipped with Tempest IIs (or in the case of 80 Sqn Spit 24s). J5-J was SN344 and the silver job in the background probably J5-H SN330, the CO’s aircraft.
The Tempest IIs could be from 16, 26 or 33 squadrons, although from what is visible of the code letters 16 (EG) or 33 (5R) look more likely.

I wasn’t aware that so many luftwaffe airframes were stil lying around in 1947/1948. I suppose that all of them got scrapped by say 1950?

CAF-UK,
I’m no expert by any means but I think that the first picture of the “He-111” is in fact a FW-189
I’m sure someone else can/will confirm this
