I was suprised to not see any post about the recent news from LGW. I believe that only two days ago the first aircraft, a BA 747, passed under the new airbridge from the current terminal to the new satellite. Any pics or further news.
Thanks everyone-

Checked this one recently with the powers that be at work.
Still no plans to return the 747 to LGW.

I believe, for those who questioned why a 744 was used, that BA will be swopping the 777 for the 744 on its LGW-MCO flights.
fits with the inevitable swarm of Brits heading out for the sun this summer.

We had this debate a few weeks/months ago and came to the conclusion the 744s are most probably remaining at LHR, at least for the remainder of this year.

I would be! LOL, have you ever been up the CN Tower? Ok, slightly different heights involved, but still, glass floors with big drops below, I ain’t a fan of! 🙂

The bridge was built on a remote part of the airfield, then moved in one piece to it’s final location. Apparently quite a sight to see.
It has been designed with viewing in mind, but as it’s airside you will have to be travelling to have access. The original design even had a reinforced glass floor, but it was decided that people wouldn’t be comfortable walking on glass at that height. Some people have no sense of adventure!

and I bet every person who happens to be walking over it when a 744 passes underneath will quite literally crap it! 😀

That’s a pretty big difference! Interesting how you can do comparisons with models.
Yip, and to think people dismiss them as mere toys ! 😀

Planes rarely have to pass underneath the one at DEN. How much taller is the A380 than the 744 anyway?
About this much…

Not really, there are plenty of alternative routes around the bridge for the A380 to take.

Well done to BA 🙂
Won’t this bridge effectively make LGW out of bounds for possible A380 operations? r atleast limit them.

The bridge connects the North Terminal to a new North Terminal Satellite. This is in an area where there were previously hard stands for aircraft, meaning passengers had to be bussed to the terminal, now however they just need to walk over the taxiway.
From what I understand the bridge is meant to be optimised for viewing the aircraft, and was part of the initial design brief.
As A330Crazy says the 744 was positioned over to LGW as it is BA’s flagship aircraft, depsite it not actualy having operated out of LGW for about 2 years. It was all designed to get maximum publicity, which I must really congratulate BA on, as they usualy let Virgin bask in all the glory on these ocassions!!!
Change for Good is a scheme run by BA onboard. They encourage you to place any loose change you have, in any currency in the back of envelopes in the seatbacks and have raised vast amounts of money for charity over the last 10 years. Last month Roger Moore and the Queen were involved in a special ceremony celebrating this fact, and this 744 and an A319 had special logos applied.
Another brownie point for BA in using this aircraft in the publicity as well 🙂

Does anyone know if it is possible to take photos from this bridge, or are we going to be hampered by some awful thick, tinted glass?

Excellent pics from the BAA site. I think the BA 747 was a special flight that flew to LGW especially for this occasion. With the 747 being the biggest and tallest PAX jet, and BA being the main operator in the North terminal, thats why it was there.
Im just totally shocked at how quick its been put up! 😮 Was only back in December it was nothing apart form a bit of scafolding etc.
I heard that the PAX Bridge is actually tall enough to fit an A380 under it.

This is the best or only close-up on airliners.net. ‘Change for Good’ and something about 10 years.

That BA 747 has special markings on the nose, can someone perhaps provide me with a close-up? I am curious to find out what it says.
