A good first attempt, Josh.
The main bits of advice I can give you are to first, read the manual! I know this sounds silly, but you really can get some quite useful information from the manual. There are a lot of terms to get used to when you start using a DSLR. ISO, white balance, shooting modes, etc. To get the most out of your camera you really do need a level of understanding of all these things, and more.
Second, fiddle! Fiddle lots. Read the manual first to get a basic idea of what the different functions actually do, then play with them all. Take as many random shots as you can using as many different settings as you can. See which ones look best, then look at the EXIF data to see what settings you used.
Thirdly, read this!
http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/histograms1.htm
So many poeple shy away from using the histogram. Don’t be one of those people! The histogram is the single most useful tool a digital photographer can have (apart from the camera itself). Learn what it is and how to use it. It really will make your life easier!
Above all, have fun! It can be quite daunting when you enter the world of the DSLR but you’ll soon pick it up. Remember, you only get out what you put in but if you’re prepared to take the time to learn good shooting and editing techniques, you’ll be rewarded with lots of wonderful images. 🙂
Enjoy!

Nice pics Jon, was a good day!
Allen and Scott, thanks for your comments and advice. From what ive been told elsewhere, there was a problem with the white balance. Also i was shooting at “M, ISO 100, 1/400” which from what i understand is for a sunny day. Which proberly explains why the BA shot is ‘ok’ and the others are preety c***. My friend tells me that when its a cloudy day my shutter speed should be slower and that i should try 1/250 or something similar. What settings would you guys recommend.

Hi Josh
Welcome to DSLR world.
A fair attempt, as Allen says above a wee bitty underexposed. Which you will no doubt know. Practice makes perfect, keep fiddling away, you WILL get there, real soon.
PS Check your PM’s
Cloud:
Not being familiar with the camera, i assume it is a point n shoot?, they seem a bit blurry/unsharp. perhaps you are using the cameras zoom full?? which can result in instability and grainy shots. A few also are “missing bits” tails cut etc… compose your shot before pressing the trigger, no need to use full zoom and try fit the subject into a tight frame, zoom out and give yourself some breathing space, get the whole subject in,and you can always fix the crop/rotation etc.. later with photoshop or something. Good set though.

OK Josh, apart from the BA 737 they all look a little under-exposed (not much) and you appear to have used the wrong colour balance setting, tungsten instead of daylight. It maybe time of day and lighting that’s fooling the ATW that perhaps you were using…?
The 737 shot, conversely is a wee bit over-exposed (not much) but the colours look more natural. Where was your Canon wheel when you did that shot as compared to the other stuff ?

Here’s mine…
Ah, wondered how long it would be before you had a few posted on here!:D
Seeing as I gave Josh a lift to LGW today, it would only seem fair for me to show a few shots with my new Fujifilm S5700, which is a much better camera to my previous one, however, please bear in mind this camera is not as good as a DSLR, so quality is not great, and as it was also my first attempt at aviation photography with this new camera as well, I am rather pleased with results!
Advice and comments welcome on how I can improve would be most appreciated.:)

Some nice first shots there, Josh. Looks like I wasn’t the only one to find a 400D in my stocking this Christmas. :p

Not bad for a first attempt, Josh. 🙂
What image editing software are you using?
Thanks Tom, and none!:dev2: Maybe we can bump into one another next year and you can show me how to get some excellent results with it!
