Gatwick's Herald G-CEXP

Hello,
I am writing to enquire what is proposed to happen to the Handley Page Herald 209 (G-CEXP) which is currently stored close to Maintenance area 2 at Gatwick.
I understand that former classic aircraft which have resided there (including Comet G-APDW, and Trident G-AWZK) have been scrapped recently.
Is a simular outcome proposed for the Herald?
Many thanks
Paul

Herald

In the past this airframe has been offered to Gatwick Aviation Museum.
It is now in a fire training area and has been for a couple of years.
Our understanding is that it is still on charge with the Fire and Rescue services at the airport. Until it is “written off” it cannot be disposed of.
Every few months the museum queries the status of the Herald and is given the same reply.

It is now deteriorating quite steadily, if it’s not moved or some preventive action taken soon it will more difficult to recover it.
Its demise is not imminent, but action soon would help to ensure that it’s still around in the next few years.

Hi Paul

It was a few years ago since the Trident and Comet airframes were scraped they were stored for some time on Hangar 7s apron which is now used by Virgin Atlantic. Last I understood was that the Herald was still on charge with some department at BAA and was going to be used as a ground trainer in what role I am unsure, word was also that it could be used by the fire service however they have a purpose built fire trainer now. It was also linked with a move across the perimeter fence to Gatwick Aviation Museum but it seems to have fallen short by less than 20 meters.

That’s a very good question Paul, I’ve wondered the very same thing.

I hope that she’s not scrapped. The fact that she wasn’t when the Comet and Trident got the chop hopefully means she’ll not suffer that fate. There was talk of her jumping over the fence so to speak to join the Gatwick Aviation Collection.

I recall LGW paying Channel Express quite a large sum of money for her, so I guess she’s still on the books for the same amount! She could certainly do with a good clean.

Can anyone out there offer any more…???
