Well, the election season is neraly upon the UK once again, so I thought a thread where we could discuss it and matters arising might be worthwhile?
The idea announced by the Lib Dems the other day struck me as a good one: a new tax on homes over £2million, closing tax loopholes, and no income tax on wages up to £10k.
The only problem I have with them is that they wouldn’t renew our nuclear deterrent, which imho indicated a kind of underlying naivity about the world we live in, but that’s just me.
A bit fed up with Labour, and being a child of the late 80s I’ve grown up with a genetic predisposition against the tories, so I feel rather stuck! 😀
So, what is important to everyone else? What will you be thinking of when you enter the polling booth?

I am looking for a party that releases us from European control, controls imigration and gives us the republic we deserve. Unfortunatley these partys either have no other policies, are racist or anarchists.
Although Labour actually no longer stand for what they are supposed to they are the only option. The alternative is the Tories and the return to the oppresion of the so called `prolateriat` population. I fear this is what is going to happen.
Ive been looking into the Isle of Man, looks like a nice place to live.

I’ll vote for any party that is willing to take a firm stand on immigration. By firm I mean sorry the country is full and we will not be taking any immigrants for the next 20 years at least.

Whichever party favours massive cuts in expenditure and taxes would get my vote. The first is vital to start the progress towards reducing the UK’s fearful indebtedness and the second will encourage enterprise and work and QED increase government revenue.
No department in the state sector should be immune from cuts including the NHS and education. Cuts should be in wasteful and duplicated administration and expenditure focussed on the frontline – and that principle should apply equally to education and defence. The state sector has swelled hugely in the last 12 years and must be cut back to 1997 levels. We need to withhold all payments to the EU until the accounts are signed off and the CAP reformed.
The entire basis of taxes and benefits should be re-organised taking millions out of tax and out of benefits altogether.
But unfortunately no one is promising this and so I am not sure where my vote will go. I’ll wait until the last minute to see who comes closest to these ideals. But I already know one party which will not.

Hmm…
It would be interesting to see the ‘None of the above’ option on ballot papers, but then I suspect nobody would ever get elected! :p

What a shower…
Considering that my UK political news tends to come from the Radio 4 Comedy Podcast I just want a “none of the above” on my postal vote!
I’ll vote for someone who’s willing to take a sensible non sensationalist view of climate change, has lived a real life (for example had a real job), is willing to support our armed forces and listens to the normal person who pays their taxes and wants a decent country to live in… More discipline in schools and higher educational standards (the abolition of league tables for a start). Stuff the vocal minorities and lets look after the silent majority!
I’m living in Japan. I don’t feel that homesick. That makes me sad because I should miss home and feel proud to be British, but I don’t.

What an excellent idea. If we keep all the party politics in here it will be much easier to get involved – or stay away. Still what hope of keeping politics out of the rest of the threads:rolleyes:

Apparently the Lib/Dems wanted a ‘Mansion Tax of £ 1 million . But like they do ! they dithered and changed their minds , probably because most MPs and High Ranking civil servants homes are worth that much ….so to help the millions of poor payed workers they are now punishing a now ‘fewer’ super rich , somehow the maths arn’t adding up ! no wonder there called the ‘wishy washy party’ …. just my own opinion for what its worth .
