Following on from the question ‘when was the last Spitfire Scrapped’…
when an airframe was noted as ‘reduced to produce’ in the 50’s and 60’s (I was thinking of Maintenance Airframes or Airframes returned to the RAF from ATC squadrons for example) what did this mean exactly? Did the RAF handle this themselves and then scrap the components if the Type was no longer in service? Did they get an outside contractor to do this (bearing in mind this would be a single instance of an airframe and not dozens)? Would the components have been stored? or perhaps even dumped somewhere out of the way on the relevant airfield?

In about 1966 a Valletta turned up at RAF Oakington and was transported to the fire dump area.Being curious airmen ,myself and a friend had a look inside and it was full of old generators and starter motors and other electrical items, being both elect mechs we knew there was a fair amount of copper looking at us,unfortunatly at that moment the resident RAF policeman turned and in thier usual polite fashion told us to go away and leave things be!As if we had any other ideas! Also saw Lincolns being chopped up at Aldergrove @1960.I think component parts would obviously be used if they were common to other types ,obviously in the case of the Valletta this was not so.
