Hi chaps, a friend has asked me to try and research a relative. I think he’s too young for the first world war but date of birth may be wrong? Anyway, the details I have are as follows and any help at all to flesh out his life would be most gratefully received!

A Service Number of 349736 is in a group between 340001 to 360000 which have been issued from Sep 1919 to June 1925 to Civilians
London Gazette search shows
Retirement.
Flight Lieutenants:—
G. SMITH (50623). 30th Dec. 1949.
In official records then he was never George Lindsay/Linsey Smith just George Smith – I even check AFL for Jul 1945 and he is George Smith

Well, if the spelling is correct, then in England there is:
George Linsey Smith born abt 1890 Wibsey Bradford Yorkshire, living in Horton in the 1891 census (Piece 3641, Folio 134, page 15).
But, matching the information you have there is also a death record for George L Smith birth abt 1903 Death registered June 1964, registration district Kettering (which fits with Oundle) in the deaths index Volume 3b page 491. Worth getting that certificate I would say.

Does Terry know if any of the details in your first post are fact? Just wondering, say for example we knew that date of death is definitely correct we concentrated on that to find him? Of course if those service numbers are his and he is a relative, Terry could apply for his service history.

Thanks Robert – perhaps then the year of birth is wrong, which could allow for WW1 service, or the country of birth is wrong. It’s all a long shot on this one and Terry has been hitting dead ends from the start.

I agree with you, I think he may have been too young, the information seems hard to verify with the surname being popular, if the service numbers are correct, here’s one of his promotions in the London Gazette, right hand column, 4th entry from the bottom, but he probably has already seen this…. https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/35966/supplement/1573
