German Fighter Crash Outside Borrough Green, Kent

Many, many years ago in the 1970’s I accompanied some pals to try and locate the crash site of what we believed to be a German Fighter (possibly a FW190) in some fields to the North of the A25 Maidstone road, just outside Borrough Green (heading towards Maidstone)
. We found only 2 pieces of wreckage, both very small. Amazingly after multiple moves I still have one of the bits, probably unidentifiable and I have always wondered what the aircraft was. I seem to recall being told that it had buried itself deep into the ground and was never recovered. The location was, as I say, to the North of the A25 between that road and the M26 (which wasnt biult at the time!). Has anyone heard of this crash? K

Yes, you are correct about the motorway I’m sure.

It will be interesting to see a photo of the bit you have. Somebody here will recognise it, no doubt.

Here is the account in Rawnsley’s book ‘Night Fighter’ for you:

Thanks, Andy. I live in Cornwall now so my grip on Kentish geography has slipped somewhat but it would be the M26 not the M25. I will find the piece and upload a photo of it. Perhaps you can tell me what part of the plane it might have come from.

I think I am correct in saying that you will also find details here:

I think parts have been found in the field over the years but seem to recall hearing that the M25 had either sliced through the site or earthworks had covered it over. But I may have imagined that.

No photo, I’m afraid.

Yes, there was a Fw 190 on 13/14 June 1943 at Nettlefold Farm, Borough Green. I always understood that to be very close the M25. Lt H Ullrich POW.

Shot down by Cunningham and Rawnsley of 85 Sqn. I seem to recall it mentioned in the book ‘Night Fighter’.

I will look to see if there is a photo, but I don’t recall one.
