German Zeppelins and Airships

Do any of the German Zeppelins that were operated before and during the Second World War still exist anywhere in museums? Or for that matter any of the prewar British airships?

Are there any historical airships in existence anywhere? Or the reamins of?

They seem to be a bit of a forgotten machine these days. I believe it was with airships that Germany first bombed London in World War One. I am always pleased to see the Zeppelin in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. It must have been great to ride in one of those luxury liners of the air.

I don’t know if I’d want to ride in one into combat though like the bomber versions! 😮

The sheds are in tustin,Ca.

I believe El Toro Marine Base in Southern California has 2. Helicoptor pilots can fly right in. 😀

The airship hangers in question are located at the Ex-U.S.M.C. helicopter base in Tustin,California. They are approx.5 miles or so west of the now also Ex-U.S.M.C. El Toro airbase.I drive by them nearly every day and believe me they are HUGE!………………………Tim………………………………..
p.s. One little added nugget of unimportant info.During the mid 1980’s,I used to work at a business located right beside the Tustin Helicopter Base.We were located directly under the take off and landing flight paths because we were in an industrial area and they wanted to avoid residential neighborhoods.
anyway, they flew so low overhead that I remember crewmembers hanging out of the doorways and looking down at me and I could makeout details of their faces!unless you have been under a flight of Sea King or Chinook helos
then you cant imagine just how loud and earthshaking an experience it is!sometimes it went on all day!WOW!My ears are still ringing! 😮

Is it possible that their ( Zeppelins ) destruction was ordered as part of the Versailles treaty? In any case the scrap value of the metals in post war Germany faced with reparation payments would have made it unlikely that any were preserved.

Not forgetting the Sheds at Cardington. How many airship sheds are there left? I know there’s at least one in the States, there were one or two in India…

Cheers

Quite a few British airship bits at Old Warden! And large models of the R100 and R101.

There is an amazing Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance in South Germany. Apart from minor parts, such as a gondola and engines, there is rather large reconstructed section of the Hindenburg, which is complete in every detail (furniture etc.). No glassfibre anywhere, everything according to original plans. Very, very impressive!

The Gondolas of quite a few exist in places like the RAF museum and the Brussels Air Museum.
