In early September this year I had a few days touring round northeast Germany
and when I saw the satellite view in the BBC report I thought I had seen something like that when I was planning the route.

It just took me a few days to find it again.

I drove through Zehdenick (where 11 aircraft are displyed outside a factory) which is about 5 miles to the south.

Spot on RMR, thanks for the geography lesson! ‘That’ village of Vogelsang isn’t even in my map index. 😮

It shows clearly on Google Maps.

Have a look at Latitude N 53° 3′ 30.7757″ Longitude:E 13° 21′ 46.1096″

This is somewhere near the centre.

Somewhere north west of Juterbog but I can’t see it either! 🙂

It shows clearly on Google Maps. A huge forest with odd clearings with only foundations remaining and dotted about in other clearings a few buildings. But nature seems to have engulfed much of what was once visible.

But I have found more photos from a report pre-dating the BBC’s story.

I tried to find where that German installation was on google earth but had no luck.

It would be great to visit it, is it in a national park now or on private land?

I always find images like those absolutely fascinating. It really brings home how much the world has changed in the past 20-odd years: and how much safer it is now- even if it doesn’t always feel it.

Englishrussia.com is a brilliant site for this sort of thing: there’s always photos of similar abandoned installations all over the old USSR
Check out this one:

There’s a load of photos – but look out for the one that has the aircraft recognition poster for enemy aircraft. You might spot some familiar shapes….
