Gerona Crash Site

I have just seen this shot on planepictures.net ( http://planepictures.net/netshow.php?id=354581 and it brought up a few questions as to what happened in the accident.

I’ve marked on the photo the route that I’m guessing the aircraft took, but cant quite work out how it happened. At point X there appears to be an embankment with some trees, I would have expected that to have caused quite an unpleasent stop for the aircraft? I guess that the wheels must have come detached a long time before then, and it seems surprising how it managed to go so far remaining intact. And at which point did the fuselage break in 3?

Not sure if anyone can answer any of my questions or elaborate on what I’ve already said, it’d be interesting to hear what other people can interpret after observing the crash site.

P.S. I hope that I’m allowed to edit the photo in this way? I gave the link to where it came from and kept the copyright. If I have broken the rules then I expect one of the mods to delete the thread.

From what I read on the accident it appeared that there were bad storms on the night of the flight around the airport.

On the 2nd approach after a go-around the F/O expressed to the Captain that he wanted to divert to BCN but the Captain didn’t want to. As the Captain was of course in charge they went ahead for a 2nd attempt and then crashed. I bet the F/O said “I told you so…” lol

Ive got to admit I dont know much about the crash, but as ive said here before, I flew G-BYAG in 1996, and I flew into Gerona just a few weeks before the crash on a Britannia A320 (EI-TLO), and one of my Dads friends was on the plane when it crashed!

Bit spooky or what!

EDIT- The accident report on the AAIB report is very interesting, am I right in thinking that the pilots were considering diverting to Barcelona at the time due to the thunderstorms in the area? Cant remember why they didnt, was it something to do with the fuel and due to the fact they had already carried out a missed approach?

You’ve clearly identified and credited the source of the picture, so I’m happy for it to remain – so long as no-one complains.

Fair enough?
