Thanks for all the comments guys – he says he ” almost ” signed up to O2 yesterday and almost signing up is pretty decisive by Mr. Bee’s standards !!!

I have been a user of Ntl/Virgin cable broadband for close on eight years. In all of that time I have suffered just one ‘outage’ as they call it. that was caused by a car hitting the green box thingy that sits by the side of the road.
When you do call India for their customer services, they are polite and helpful, once you get past the bit where they think you know zilch about computers, and how they work. They can run what is called ‘Blue tools’ on the system to troubleshoot where the problem lays.
This was better when you had the private phone number of the engineers at the Swansea hub;) but overall the Ntl/Virgin service has been as good as gold. Wouldnt swap them unless I really had to. Second choice would be BT, my brother who lives in a small village has faultless BT broadband by phone line..nuff said:)

BT Tech support is shocking…..
My broadband line was out of service, they wanted me to hump the PC around the house and plug it into every phone socket. I suggested that I just use the router:eek:…. then they told me to unscrew a socket from the wall as there was a “special test” socket behind it. “Its not there” – “yes it is being there sir”. “No its not” etc etc.
the speeds depend on where you are from the exchange and the quality of cable, in my town 60% of the houses are “too far” from the exchange so what bandwidth there is can be used up quickly, school homework times etc. Check if you are in a good “hot spot” or a “not spot” before you sign up.

Never heard of them, AOL was too slow, cable is better if you have it in your area, I have had BT for last 3 years, thought that if they run the telephones they might be better than most – wrong!! – but changing over with business line, emails, etc, does not bear thinking about – hoping they will install cable in our area at some stage (Stonehenge) – but guess they are scared of what they might find!.
What made you marry one of Gaddaffi’s men?
Cheers Brian.
Took me ages to get the Libran/Libyan reference, and I’m a member of Mensa.Brain cells must be dying off fast in my twilight years.Has anyone heard of Fast and got any comments ?

Used to have NTL which in our house stood for NT Hell as the service was expensive and customer support as near nonexistent as made no difference. Now with BT and no problems so far (4+ years)

I started with PlusNet and they were excellent, then, after about four years we hit a problem and their previously excellent customer service went to worms. Changed to Tiscali, who are currently excellent (Well actually just delivering exactly the service I pay for without any glitches) but I had notification on Saturday that they have just been absorbed by Talk Talk. Hoping I don’t have to move again.
Moggy
Yeah ! I am in the same boat, wonder if they will offer us any good deals Moggy ??
Hope I will not have to move again, escaping from talk talk last time was pure comedy…absolutely amateur ”customer relations”…’but but but’ if you know what I mean
cheers baz

BB…sky are quite a good service depending on how close you live to your telephone exchange, quite cheap if you have sky TV too
otherwise BT are fairly ok if your prepared to pay a little bit more
thats what i found anyway

Thanks lady and gents, that’s been really helpful.Just got to persuade Mr. Bee to settle on one now. He’s a Libran, and choosing one from several options sends him into a proper tizzy.Sometimes it can take years.

I have been with AOL since I first got internet about 4 years ago. everything was fine at first but ever since AOL was sold by the original owners the service has been pretty naf. Their revised software crashed my computer so badly on two occassions that I had to get a computer shop to rebuild windows for me at £80 a time. the only compensation I got from AOL was a reduction in my monthly fee when I asked for my migration code so that I could leave. After a few months they reduced my level of service to the level everyone else gets that pays the reduced fee so my compensation was almost non-existent.
If it weren’t for the fact that changing provider seems to be fraught with problems and can involve some time with no service at all I would take my custom elsewhere tomorrow.

I had similar experiences with Plusnet/Force9 and moved on.
You might want to look into O2. If they have “unbundled” your local phone exchange and you’re in their network then you get a good deal from them. And if you are already an O2 customer, then you get an even better deal, or you could use it as an excuse to get an iPhone. 😉
Have a look at: http://broadband.o2.co.uk/home/index.jsp

steer clear of Aol, their broadband is slow, if you can actually get on line at all, and their customer service is appalling.

Virgin.Rarely any problems with their service. Very reliable.
until you cancel the service and they make u pay hundreds of pounds excess for a service you didnt even use:mad:

I’m on Orange, 4 years now. No problems at all.
I await Sky in this area.
I rented a place last year and used their Toucan (It was about 6.99 a month and it was sh!t). If you did not physically use it for a minute (Like typing a big Email) it threw you out, having to wait 20 seconds to connect again when you hit send. It threw you out of forums, having to log in again. Very annoying. Apparently, these cheaper options use a shared bandwidth so if you’re not “Actually” using it, they divert it to somebody that is. The Teckies on here can explain it better.

Did a whole package with sky (TV, phone and internet) No problems so far.
