Rest Easy Bill
By: Dave Homewood - 27th May 2013 at 22:00
I have personally known Bill since 1989, which is also the year that he wrote his book on Dad’s Army, and founded the first Dad’s Army Appreciation Society – which he re-established in 1993 after the first effort foundered. Bill was a truly wondeful, warm man. Nothing like his public persona of Hodges. I have so much admiration for him, he has long been a hero of mine. He overcame a lot in his life and succeeded. He could not read or write till he was about 14, but went on to write seven or eight books and many of them were best sellers.
As Moggy said the Dad’s Army fan base kept him busy, but it was he that created that fan base, starting the DAAS and remaining its President right the way through till his death. I am certain he loved appearing at events and meeting the public, he gave so much time to it. He also did an awful lot of charity work, such as for Kingston Hospital Radio, etc.
The world is a little less bright today without him. 🙁

who was that then moggy?
My pilot friend Tim Ball who was the boy Sea Scout who played a bugle call in one of the episodes filmed on location here in Norfolk “Come on in, your time is up”
I don’t think he’d claim to be a main cast member 🙂

It’s sad how the cast of Dad’s Army now seems to be practically died out.
Most M*A*S*H actors are still going strong, though I suppose they weren’t old men in the seventies like the Dad’s Army actors were.

Mrs CH has just told me that Pam Cundell is 93!!…….

Yes, Ian Lavender the youngest of the trio – Frank Williams must be in his mid-eighties and Pam Cundell not much younger.

The Dad’s Army fan circuit kept him well occupied for years bless him. Sad he’s gone.
Poignant too as I spent lunchtime on an old 8th AF base with one of the diminishing band of surviving cast members.
RIP

Sad but a good life and an extremely talented comic actor who did so much more than the series for which he is famous. He can still be enjoyed on repeats of Round the Horne in which he played all the characters who were not the regulars.
