Hi all. My name is David.
I have been into aviation for around forty years. I have been a member of the ATC, so mostly into military aviation. But now I am trying to get into civil aircraft, as my local airport (HUMBERSIDE) is just six miles away. I am having a hard time to tell the aircraft types apart:). I do photography, with my two nikons (D40 & D70) with lenes 18-55, 55-200 & 70-300 mm.

Yeah, if you are going to Manchester, get there early, that way you will see a good variation of bigger aircraft from abroad and while you are there, be sure to pick up a copy of Flightcheck from the aviation shop as it gives you all flights and the expected aircraft types for that flight.

if youre having problems distinguishing the different types simply go to airliners.net and use the search.study the pictures and soon you will see the differences that give you clues to each aircraft.I also recommend spending a day at Manchester here you will see most major types in service today.
Good luck and welcome to civil aviation.
