I really enjoyed this from The Telegraph today – it says it all!!
“So, can I get a heads-up on this innovative survey of office jargon, ahead of its roll-out? Let’s get our ducks in a row and make sure we’re singing from the same hymn sheet. To be perfectly honest, this could be a tipping point. In actual fact, it’s a bit of a wake-up call. Someone’s got to step up to the plate. Lessons will be learnt, very much so. No more issues around stakeholder satisfaction in any way, shape or form. We’re looking to deliver robust solutions, up and running from the get-go. It’s a big ask. Basically, I need this to be turn-key. Absolutely. Give it 110 per cent and push the envelope with some blue-sky thinking. Go the extra mile. Bear with me… I’m out of pocket next week (it’s a work-life balance thing), but ping it over, and I’ll revert back. You’re a star. We’ll touch base soonest and liaise with human resources going forward. Got a lunch – catch you later. “

any way you want Charlie, im not too bothered lol..i may be from Sunderland…but i try not to class myself with the “mackems” as it seems to apply more to football these days, which i want no part of having worked at the stadium and suffered a tirade of abuse from the SAFC fans (while trying to protect them) 🙂

Scott – It was spelled that way when I was around the area and I see there are variations of the spelling from the Urban Dictionary
mackam
someone from sunderland. a proud definition from local dialect.
” we mackam you tackam” – ” we make them you take them” from ship building days on river wear.
alternative spellngs: makam makem macam maqam mackem
But I am happy to go with mackem in respect to a real mackem forum member!:D

One of my work colleagues, and a good mate, is from and lives in Sunderland… I find it difficult to not say to customers, if you want to know anything about Banjos, instruments to “illegally impress” your relatives (age exempt)… he’s the one to see. I mentioned that the other day to him, it took him a while for the penny drop… Oh dear.

Well done!! I wonder if the first link in the “follow ups” was written by Heslop of this parish. I am sure he was/is at university in Newcastle.

This should be self explanatory and continue the thread drift which seems to have run it’s course.

So, I just thought I’d keep it cool, say all very good and be on our way… Hadn’t the heart to say; ‘If you’re from Middlesbrough, that doesn’t make you a Geordie. Just because you’re from the Northeast doesn’t make you a Geordie, unless you’re actually from Newcastle.’
A day without learning something new is a day wasted! 😉

As one who has lived or spent time all over the country I find the depth of these parochial differences and that they even matter, fascinating. A bit of drift from office jargon though….

I was in Dubai having a look around an electrical store once with my Girlfriend (she’s from Dubai) when a member of staff kindly approached me. As I answered he immediately caught my Geordie accent, being from Newcastle upon Tyne of course. He said; ‘Cool! A fellow Geordie, where are you from?!’. Puzzled, I answered Newcastle. I asked where abouts in Newcastle are you from? He said: ‘Ehum, I’m not from Newcastle, I’m from Middlesbrough!

Quite off topic, but it boils my p*ss somewhat. How many people don’t get it. Uuurgh!

TV weather girl:
“I’m gunna see yer termurra”.
I was addressed as ‘Fella’ by a policeman just the other day. I was able to make an effective correction.
