Hi all
Quick question – what colour were the 2 bladed wooden props on RAF Gladiator Mk.Is? Were they left in a natural wood finish, or given a black (protective?) coat? Or were both finishes used?
Cheers

Thats the same construction as my Singapore prop and the Hart prop boss I have. The Grebe Prop boss is far more intrest as it is laminated in stead of ply.

Early production RAF Gladiators also had lighter coloured blades. The propeller boss by the way was not solid wood laminations on these and similar props but was a built up fairing of tri-angular formers with a ply outer cone.

If of any interest, when the Irish Air Corps Gladiators were camouflaged the props were dark grey

Thanks for the replies.
I thought as much. I’ve just spent an hour getting a nice natural wood finish on the prop of my Roden 1/48 Gladiator kit…oh well!!

It was the black Jablo plasticised coating – the same material, for example, as used on Rotol airscrews for Spitfire & Hurricanes etc of the same period. The propellors were in fact made by Watts.

Night with 4″ Yellow tips – certainly on the later pre-war and wartime machines.
