Glen Miller – Truth to be Revealed

Apparently, the ‘real’ truth about the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Glen Miller will be revealed next week , according to an article published yesterday (Thurs July 7th) in Bedfords local newspaper ‘Times and Citizen’ see the article attached.

Should prove interesting . . . . . . . .

It hadn’t really occurred to me until now but Major Glenn Miller is quite a high rank for somebody who only joined the forces in 1942 and who wasn’t in a combat role (so not promoted by attrition of senior officers). Was this a sort of ‘courtesy rank’ once Miller became well-known enough to be meeting senior officers and other VIPs?

This could be true: when William Wyler was engaged to film the 8th Air Force in 1942, he was asked by an interviewing officer, “Rank…umm…do you want to be a Major?” And so he was!

I know there was a small museum there; does anybody know if it is still open?

Very much still open, almost every Sunday during the summer, and expanding all the time. 🙂

All the best,
PB

How can an aircrafr ‘fly out’ of somewhere without ‘taking off’ from there?

Yes, sorry, I added that second part as an edit after I posted my original question.

My original question was what historic US Army Air Force aircraft could be flying out of Twinwoods Farm en route to France; it only occurred to me immediately after I’d posted that the newspaper article doesn’t actually say that. The aircraft could be flying to France after flying over Twinwoods Farm!

I’m still wondering what type of aircraft it will be (unless the article has misquoted); surely a US Army Air Force aircraft has to be something pre 1947?

I didn’t know there was no (grass?) runway left at Twinwoods Farm; in all the years I’ve lived locally I’ve never managed to get over there. I know there was a small museum there; does anybody know if it is still open?

Thanks for the tip about ‘The Queens Head’.

Does anybody know Miller’s movements before the fateful flight? I seem to recall that he and his manager (?) had lunch in a pub before the flight; Twinwoods Farm is only a few miles from here and I wondered if it was any of the local pubs.

I’m led to believe that ‘The Queens Head’ (still existing) in Milton Ernest was a regular drinking place for Glen Miller etc whist they were billeted at Milton Ernest Hall.

Yes, I know, but I was wondering what US Army Air Force aircraft would be flying out of Twinwoods Farm in 2011? 🙂

Of course it doesn’t have to take-off from there. 😉

Gonna have to be a helicopter or Airship owing to a lack of runway.

Is that a present-day picture of Glenn Miller on the right hand page then?

Bruce Barrymore Halpenny wrote a long article on this in his Ghost Stations (Volume 3, I think it was) He then waxed very indignantly in Volume 4 when someone had the temerity to argue with him about it.
As far as I’m concerned, Glen Miller was kidnapped by UFOs and taken to the Mother Ship on the dark side of the Moon(light) Serenade.
