Glenn Curtiss Museum, Hammondsport NY

We did have a good look around the area though we weren’t absolutely sure of the exact location of the Curtiss factory. What does still exist is the older Mercury Aircraft plant whose construction began during WW2. The company is now in newer premises on the outskirts of town. During the war they produced, among other things, P-40 tail assemblies, fuel tanks and C-46 parts such as rudder pedals and undercarriage legs. The 10000th P-40 tail assembly is displayed in the Curtiss Museum-

I was recently reading about the firm in the Curtiss book by Peter M. Bowers published by Putnam.

It shows turn of the century drawings of the original Curtiss factory in Hammondsport. A quick check of satellite maps showed little, if any of it, remain.
That’s a pity, as I find the early 20th century industrial period fascinating with its many aircraft and automobile producers.

Yes, the Commando is still there. It was in the middle of a repaint when we visited –
