Glider Fuselage

back in the mid eighties i drove up to thirsk in north yorkshire to view a glider fuselage id been told about situated at the rear of a pub(whos name escapes me) on the main thirsk road ,it was well overgrown on the edge of the car park but all there (minus its outer skin ),the tubular construction clearly visible and in exellent condition ,unfortunatly the organisation i was involved with didnt think the glider was worth having so it was forgotten despite my protestations, later i discovered that lots of glider fuselages were sold off after the war and some were used as garages, a mates father in law owned one in the sixties and kept it for more than twenty years, wonder if the thirsk unit still survives, anyone out there live nearby just a thought. 😎

http://lostinjersey.wordpress.com/page/42/ sadly not in this country but the states..Waco Glider ?

Yep that look to be a Hadrian – Think it has also appeared on some other forums and this picture was taken a while ago and although there are still a lot of parts there from several Hadrians, they are no longer as intact as they were when the photo was taken.

IIRC the Pennine glider came from the Southport area – I donated the bulk of it to the Yorkshire Air Museum where is formed the basis for their restoration / replica. The cockpit of the Pennine one was supposed to come to me but storage issues meant that It went temporarily elsewhere & I was not able to recover it later.

Not spoken to Colin for quite some time please pass on my regards. If it wasn’t him, then all I do know is that I was told it had definitely been removed.

If there is a chance the Thirsk one might still be there let me know I am 8 miles away.

In the 70’s there was talk at the Southend museum of glider fuselages buried in a former gravel or sand pit in Rochford, Essex. The site was allegedly near a footpath close to the Horse and Groom pub in Rochford.
At that time the idea of pulling large bits of aeroplane out of a hole in the ground and having any chance of restoring them to displayable condition wasn’t generally regarded as being a viable proposition and we already had more than enough on our hands trying to get the museum aircraft ready for opening day so I don’t think the story was investigated any further.

Somebody built a cottage around a Horsa fuselage section at Cholsey in Oxfordshire (now collected for a museum, can anyone add where?), so a Hadrian behind a pub is no sillier than that…

Adrian

I was slightly involved in the recovery of the Cholsey Horsa and can perhaps assist. I took numerous pics and wrote the article that was printed in Fly Past.

As this thread has suddenly sprung into life (thank you for the update, JimmyE!), I’ll jst add that if you type Horsa into YouTube, it will give you a video of Horsas being convereted into houses!

Happy New Year, everyone!

It went to The Netherlands. It is now owned by a private colletor living in Wolfheze. It will probably be displayed in the new deelen airfield museum.

It doesn’t sound silly to me,aircraft & parts still seem to turn up in the most unlikely places. From the description a Hadrian sounds promising.

Back in the early days of South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum we were offered & recovered 17′ of Horsa front fuselage from a house in Doncaster. This had originally been turned into a caravan when purchased by the owner and eventually used by him as a shed.

After removal of its sheet steel covering what remained was in a reasonable condition. We eventually exchanged this section for an Auster V fuselage from Middle Wallop.

Hadrian

I recall the remains of a Hadrian in that area many years ago & members of the Pennine group, that I was involved with at the time, went to see it with a view to obtaining the remains as a spares source for their Hadrian project (the bulk of that later formed the basis for the Hadrian project at Elvington).

I seem to recall they were pipped at the post by another individual (Colin Waterworth?) – more likely he offered money & they did not!(IMO of course!) and it was used as the basis of a Hadrian project he built up for another museum – Sorry to be so vague, but moving house and all my files and notebooks are in storage – Feeling a bit lost with out them 🙁

Alternatively, with Sutton Bank Gliding Club situated just 6 miles form Thirsk, i’d say theres probably a higher chance of it being an old training glider rather than a military machine. i’d be interested in seeing any pictures. As for possible pubs, I think you may be talking about the pub in sutton-under-whitestone cliff. It does a fantastic mixed grill.

If it actually was a glider fuselage it may have been one of the surplus Waco or Horsa gliders either geniune or from one of the many film set replicas that have been knocked up over the years though how it would end up in a pubs backyard hedge is a mystery maybe someone would like to investigate someday.
