Gliding at RAF Swinderby

Does anyone have any information or photos relating to gliding at RAF Swinderby in the 60’s or 70’s? Was there an RAFSGA club based there, and was the airfield available for private owners to use at weekends?

Thanks,

Robert

East Midlands GC was based at Swinderby from May 1956 to March 1976. There were also two civilian clubs flying there for a short time – Lincolnshire GC in the mid-1960s and Witham GC in the mid-1970s.

I flew there in July,1967 in KA-7 “353” with Mr Marshall, and T-21 “212” with canopy. The winch cable used old Martin-Baker drogue chutes. I can remember a cable break and a large length of cable and chute drifting across the busy A46 to safely land the other side. My father used to aero-tow the gliders with a RAF Chipmunk borrowed from Cranwell, and he would hop across to Waddington to re-fuel. Would also fit in tows at Spitalgate and Hemswell as well.
