Phil

I’m not sure, all I can remember is a small brass plate, stamped “Donated by The Nuffied Tractor Co.”.

The name Nuffield has stuck in my mind because we had 2 Nuffield tractors on the farm when I was growing up.

When I find my old photos, I’m sure one will show the plate.

Besen B7 VP-KRI

Sorry to create some thread drift …….again !!

Anyone here stationed at RNAS Sembawang in early 1966? It has been reported that Bensen B7 VP-KRI was present on the station around this time, owned by Lt (RN) A Reid. I am looking for a photograph of this gyro wearing those marks. It was later repatriated to the UK and became G-AVIK.

If you are able to help please contact me.

Wally

Would that have been the Nuffield Trust – I know the Trust donated gliders to the ‘GSAs’:

Gliding in Singapore

I was in Singapore between 70-72, when I first arrived the gliding club was called “The FARELF Gliding Club”, and it was changed to “ANZUK Gliding Club”. There were 5 gliders then, a T.8, T.21, 2x T.31 and the T.45. I think they were donated by the Nuffield Tractor Co., or a couple of them were.

I remember Barny and BP Singh, also Surgeon Commander Knowls or Schnoles. There was also John Griffen towards the end of 71.

A few more beers and I might remember more……

Clubs fleet consisted of T31-402 T21-403 Tutor-298 and Swallow-400

It was a great time for flying gliders then.

Jock, I concur -somehow when Slingsby gliders began to fade away from Club fleets, to be replaced by ‘glass’ – Puchaz and K-21 and even Blaniks, something, somehow, was never the same again.

B P Singh do you remeber.

Yep.

I flew all the Gliders at Simbang in my early days of Gliding. From 69 through to 70.

After lots of circuits and bumps in T31-402 and T21-403 I did my first Solo in the Tutor Christmas eve 1969 all way up to 550 feet cos I didn’t pull the stick back. Second one wasn’t so bad, managed 700′ I think it was Barney who sent me solo but I can’t be sure. John Geary is a name in my log book also so he must have been responsible for some of my training.

I first flew the Straights Swallow-400 on the 6th Feb 1970 and was signed up by J A Fox.
Got sucked into a bloody great black cloud in the Swallow and managed 14 mins and climbed to 1650 feet. 14th March saw my longest flight which was in T21-403 and lasted 43 Mins. A climb to 3.000′ and some lessons in spinning was the order of the day. Almost wet myself with glee!
