Well, technically it is, but its common name in British waters is the lesser-spotted dogfish (or Scyliorhinus canicula to the scientific types ;)).

It has a bigger brother – funnily enough the greater-spotted dogfish (Scyliorhinus stellaris)

First pic shows a small (approx. 10″) specimen of the former in a tank. It seemed to take great interest in my fingers!!

Second pic – the greater-spotted dogfish, or bull huss.

Ah….yes…..well….not as familiar with my smaller sharks as I am my larger ones….by the eyes I assumed it was some kinda catshark.

A guy from Ireland caught this catshark when I was walking the beach in Wales…we let it go, but it was bleeding a bit…hope it made it..

You only just found out? Quick,huh! Yeah,all kinds of sharks have frequented British seas for a long time.Not just England,Cornwall in particular.They regularly get the gigantic basking sharks & smaller kinds.Mako sharks swim very close to the beaches.My mum & uncle got circled by a Mako once,when they hired a boat at Looe beach.That was in the 1970’s.

Great Whites were in the Bristol Channel in reasonable numbers up until the industrial revolution when they wered riven off by pollution. A white attacked a sailor in NI. Will we see them back? Depends, what will they feed on? We don’t have the whaling stations, we don’t have the huge seal colonies that used to be about.

No, but we DO have seals – and quite a number of them up north, especially on the west coast. Not only that, but there are dolphins and whales, too, which the white is rather partial to.

No, not really. If they were stupid enough to go out where sharks were spotted, then it’s their fault for not heeding the warnings.

Happens here all the time, it’s a National sport in this country

We get about 30 types of sharks off the UK – blues, baskers, threshers, porbeagles and makos (both relatives of the great white. Ever see the movie Deep Blue Sea? Those were makos), tope, spurdogs, smoothhounds, dogfish, sleeper sharks (one species of which grows up to 20ft!) – and those are just the ones I can think of.

With the possible exception of the mako (and even then you’d have to be far enough out at sea to encounter one, despite what the papers have said this year), none of these sharks are a threat to humans. The blue shark might have a nibble on you if provoked, but you’d have to be pretty stupid to provoke it.

IF a great white turned up – so what? Would it be THAT big a deal??

Great Whites don’t live in warm water!! They don’t need to!!

Look at the places where they turn up – they’ve turned up as far north as ALASKA!! Pretty damn chilly up there last time I checked.

Great Whites have possibly been spotted around the UK for quite some time, but there’s never been hard evidence, such as a photograph or captured specimen, to support this claim.

Even TIGER SHARKS have turned up as far north as Iceland – and they’re far more “tropical” than Whitey! :rolleyes:
