Gloster Gamecock

Ok boys and girls.

Some time in the past 5 years, FlyPast or the other magazine that can’t be named had a news story about the discovery of a Gloster Gamecock in someone’s shed somewhere in the UK. The owner was thinking of returning it to airworthy condition and the only other thing I can remember about it was that had been on the civil register during the late 20’s or early 30’s and its airframe had been modified in some way. This also had nothing to do with the Gamecock replica being built for the Jet Age Museum

Does this ring a bell with anyone?

So shall I be the one to ask the question again?

If you look at their track record, skills and the fact that they’ve bothered to register it on the UK CAA register and have parts of a recovered airframe to work with, I think that you’re totally wrong.

One has to admire the perseverance of this forum. Getting on for fifteen years and the question still is being asked. Is this a forum record?

Resurrecting this long forgotten thread 9 years further on.
Still being patient but running out of time.
Any news of the Gamecock G-ADIN restoration, still looking for drawings?

OK, so no breaking news I understand, but still in the pipeline? In that case I’ll be patient I guess 😉

The owner as a suitable engine and when I last spoke to him harboured plans to fire her up in the fullness of time!

It has been some time since the last post on G-ADIN. Any news? Would love to see her in full glory one day!

Any idea if it still exists as a recording somewhere/anywhere?
The Mag Men connection makes it very interesting–for me at least.

A.

I doubt that it survives anywhere, unless someone has got on tape?? Might be worth asking DP if he has it.

I doubt that the “Clapperboard” series was committed to any easily available form of videotape, although its surprising what the archives may hold!

However if you can find a copy of Derek Piggott’s book “Delta Papa”, there’s quite a lot written about Villa Rides, Blue Max and Mag Men – plus a lot more – A cracking good read!

Yes Andy i remember that program:) it had Derrek Piggot on it talking about flying for films. He talked about the Villa Rides crash and flying under the bridge in the Blue Max in particular. It also covered flying for Magnificent Men.:D

Blue Max/ Skybolt et al.
I remember in the seventies there was an ITV children’s show called ‘Clapperboard’ hosted by a bloke called Chris Kelly.
It was basically a magazine about film, film making and the cinema.
I’m sure there was programme in that series about aviation and film making and the stunt quoted above was explained, as was the way the undercarriage on the Tiger was made to collapse.
B/M, I know you keep a track of these things–do you remember it?
Cheers
Andy

Another really knackered Spanish owned Tiger of unknown registration was used by Derek Piggott in the climax of the film to crash into the river bank after flying over the advancing Mexican rebels which were fording the shallow water. I think Charles drew the line at the risk involved in this particular caper. Derek was willing to give it a whirl as he had a great deal of experience in flying for the film industry.

I was certainly in G-AHRC for many of the airshow acts including an aerobatic slot so it could well have been me. What a blast after all those years. I must have been age 33 then and still shortish and slightly overweight but with a full head of hair. The bonedome was an RAF Mark 1 pattern worn over a cloth helmet and using an oxygen mask microphone.

The Tiger was mocked up as a Jenny for an epic film set in the Mexico of the early part of the 1900’s at a time of revolution. It was titled “Villa Rides” and starred Yul Brynner and Charles Bronson. The filming was done in Spain in the late 1960’s and the shot was taken on location near Valladolid. Charles Boddington did almost all the flying needed for the film and Colin Goodman helped with the job of ferrying the aircraft out from the UK.

Another really knackered Spanish owned Tiger of unknown registration was used by Derek Piggott in the climax of the film to crash into the river bank after flying over the advancing Mexican rebels which were fording the shallow water. Lovely.

Here are a couple I “borrowed” from The Blue Max’s collection!

The second one is also ‘HRC. The question is “what where when”??

Looks like its attempting to masquerade as a “Jenny” for a film.
